Happy National Library Week.

In less than 10 years, U.S. spending on immigration policing & detention increased by 171% while funding for libraries didn't even keep up with inflation.

Some priorities. 🤔

Alice Wong, an Asian-American woman in her early 50s, wears a black t-shirt that says “keep masks in health care”. She rocks a rich plum lipstick and cool multicolor sunglasses. She has a tracheostomy attached to a ventilator. The text reads, “The Sick Times. Alice Wong showed us Disability Justice makes our advocacy stronger. By Charlie McCone.”

Alice showed me I can lead a meaningful life — and be cool doing it — while sitting with my pain and limitations. And while we, sick and disabled, channel our rage back at those trying to ignore and erase us.

In the wake of her passing and her recent celebration of life, @loscharlos.bsky.social shares how Alice Wong taught him the power of Disability Justice and how she wielded it to bridge the hesitancy between disability, Long Covid, and COVID-cautious communities. bit.ly/4mohc12

I have never wanted a show to fail more than I do this new Harry Potter series.

There should be some financial consequence for partnering with transphobic bigots.

Please stop saying TACO. We’re talking about an ungodly number of people who could die or maimed. It’s not time for cutesy little internet slang. We have to get away from this bizarre desensitization.

From 2 years ago: “It is 12 hours after I emerged from my second gender-affirming surgery. Like a lot of people, my impulse to accelerate transition goals has escalated over the past year as a growing unease fills my body every day that one day, my body and the care it needs, will soon be outlawed.”

I can feel Dolores' words deeply in my bones: "I kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the movement." It resonates for me.

Wishing everyone impacted by and reeling from this today much ease.

Folks who are struggling with the news about Cesar Chavez, be gentle with yourselves. You are not obligated to consume all of the awful details. You can simply offer your belief and support to those who were harmed.

The Massachusetts Department of Correction has been fighting me for months, trying to withhold data about its collaboration with ICE.

Yesterday, I won that fight, and obtained records showing that the state has transferred more than 2,000 people into ICE custody since 2009.

A quick thread:

A democracy that would vote to sacrifice my people is of absolutely no use or value to me, and I would oppose it as I would oppose any threat to our survival.

I am about trans people and I am for trans people. I am for all others, to the extent it does not conflict with that first position.

If you were to actually take his white supremacy and racism seriously, you would evaluate their impacts on every single decision and policy advanced by the administration. And you would be on board for future reparations.

DeLauro to pressing clergy: 'I will not vote to abolish ICE' The Connecticut U.S. representative found herself at odds with faith leaders.

“Renee Goodman [sic], Alex Pretti – there are no words,” DeLauro said.

“You said there were no words after the murder of those two individuals,” said Rev. Jack Perkins Davidson. “I think the words are ‘Abolish ICE.’”

It Was the Most Violent Prison in America. Then the Guards Went on Strike What happens when a group of incarcerated men are left to self govern? In Walpole State Prison in 1973, “peace reigned”—until the guards were sent back in.

The history of prison uprisings in the US feels like a very timely topic right now!

this is a policy choice: public health crisis on top of public health crisis on top of public health crisis on top of public health crisis.

Official concedes 8-year-old who died in U.S. custody could have been saved as devastated family recalls final days The parents of 8-year-old Anadith Danay Reyes Alvarez told CBS News that their daughter died in Border Patrol custody because of negligence and discrimination.

In 2023, CBP killed a young Black girl that they imprisoned by incarcerating her and failing to provide the needed medical care for her sickle cell anemia

You cannot reform this apparatus which kills people no matter which party is in charge

they don't want "cooperation." they want compliance. there's a big difference.

The most important public health story right now in America is that the Trump administration is executing people in the streets, it is kidnapping people of all ages, including 2-year-olds, it is torturing them, & it is putting them in concentration camps where many have been killed or “disappeared”

It seems clear Alex Pretti, a healthcare worker, was murdered for engaging in the exact kind of community care we hope all care workers to embody: the kind that doesn’t stop at the threshold of the hospital, the clinic, but that aims to care for and support the community where and how they can

Once again: Focusing on their lack of training is a mistake. With "better training," their violence would simply cost more, and they would still kill whoever they wanted, but make it look more professional — to make people more comfortable, the way many of you are at ease with local police violence.

This is what 7 House Democrats voted with Republicans to fund. This is what Hakeem Jeffries didn't whip votes against. This is what Gavin Newsom said *wasn't* fascism.

Anyone who doesn't commit to abolishing ICE should lose their job.
