And while I don't really trust ChatGPT for translation cause the last few times I tried it, it confabulated some stuff, models like DeepL's generally produce very good and comprehensible (and ~95% accurate) output. Absolutely sufficient for low-stakes use cases.

It's simply impossible to outsource all this to a qualified translator, or even some random volunteer who knows both languages. There are gonna be errors in translation but generally people know to expect them and can work around them, and it's better than not being able to read/communicate at all.
Food labels at the store, a low-stakes interaction at city hall, back-and-forth emails with a case worker, having some kind of casual convo with the person providing you with housing, translating and answering responses to 50 messages sent to various landlords while trying to find an apartment.
Having spent a lot of time working with Ukrainian refugees in Germany, resources like this are 100% needed, but can't cover the daily and constant need for relatively low-stakes translation.
Not to get all stentorian, but both my grandfathers served in WW2, and one of them died from its lingering sting decades later (chronic injuries). An ocean of fucking blood shed, the highest price imaginable paid to create a world where this shit didn’t happen, undone for *nothing*. Fuck you!
Frfr my kid is no longer a toddler but every time I was like "hey I'm like 90% sure he would do a better job with a bit of guidance."
Also often 90% of the job isn't "what name best fits this child who is currently a complete unknown to us anyway," it's "is there a single goddamn name in existence that both of us actively like."
We did a spreadsheet and a color-coded rating system. I think people who generally haven't named children themselves have oddly romantic ideas about how this process happens even when you don't have an LLM throwing suggestions at you.
I gotta break it to you, when you're pregnant or in the initial newborn potato stage, when naming needs to happen, you have absolutely no meaningful information about who the child is beyond biological sex.
Damn I've been waiting for this snowfall and of course it happens on the one day I absolutely refuse to go outside (I'm in Berlin).
Lol that time I wandered a bit further along the Franconia Ridge than intended and unknowingly ended up making my way down the Mt. Flume Slide.
I can't believe there used to be borderline respectable Vinay apologists.
It's a thing in Germany!
I've had a French dude try the "well what did you guys [immigrants] do a hundred years ago huh, why can't you just do that again?" with me lol. It's def not just the Anglos!
These people almost never speak Russian; if you spend even 5 minutes on unfiltered Russian social media you can't possibly remain in denial about what this war is actually about and what sorts of acts Russians are cool with their military committing.
Nor does it magically make it "not real harassment"!
Seriously for people who were even vaguely following the whole thing at the time, hearing "she wasn't actually harassed" is like hearing "the moon landing was faked." Fuck Brianna Wu to hell and back, but she absolutely endured a mass harassment campaign.
I don't believe her, I just believe what I fucking saw with my own fucking eyes lol. This wasn't happening behind closed doors!
Maybe not but I don't think that's the benchmark one has to meet to have a legit claim to having endured a mass harassment campaign!
Dude we all fucking saw her getting harassed to no end, we were fucking there. It was out in public.
This is mostly an excessively online disabled person thing IMO.
Tbh as someone with permanent pre-Covid post-viral crud I'm pretty sure that most disabled people (me included) are not interested in permanently masking in public.
Yup! I would like to know what the solution is for countries that no one wants to immigrate to where TFR is below replacement rate.
If there was not, you would not get the levels of immigration required (or immigration would be going both ways about equally, which obviously would not solve the problem).
Again, your solution is dependent on there being a permanent supply of countries that are shitty places to live.
Not enough people being born to sustain an aging population/welfare state. One doesn't have to like OP's solution to understand that this is a problem.
It's self-evident that "complete reliance on there being countries out there that are a much shittier place to live than your country" may not be a viable long-term solution to the demographic problem.
Very much making up a guy to get mad at.
I'm a naturalized citizen of two countries (have immigrated twice) and originate in a shithole country and am so confused about what people are mad about, lol.
Honestly in the end (for us) it's not the money, it's the amount of time, effort and energy modern parenting demands. I might think 4 is the perfect number of kids theoretically, but no way in hell I could meet expectations with that number of kids.
