Building Community Tourism in Maine, USA 🇺🇸
Over the past months, Planeterra has led a pilot project in Maine, funded by the Maine Development Foundation through the Maine Office of Tourism, and in partnership with Main Street Maine organizations.
“It seemed the primary response that most responsible tourism companies were having was—to put it in rather frank terms—to hire Northern, white consultants or companies to measure their carbon footprint and then pay for offsets,” says Jamie Sweeting @planeterra.bsky.social

This is a powerful example of how #communitytourism creates meaningful connections and generates income to protect both biodiversity and culture.
Travellers visit the park to learn about traditional Andean agriculture, seed conservation (in partnership with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault), and Indigenous weaving practices, while directly supporting the local economy.
Located in the stunning Sacred Valley of Peru, Parque de la Papa is made up of five Quechua communities working together to preserve over 1,300 varieties of native potatoes, along with the ancient knowledge and traditions that sustain them.

🌱 Our partnership with @planeterra.bsky.social is growing! After 175,000 organic fruit trees, we're planting 250,000 more & investing in 3 vital community nurseries in Akrich, Tadmamt, & Aknoul. The new Aknoul Nursery with #ANEF will cultivate 100,000 olive saplings!
