Posts by The Time I Have Left β³Demo OUT NOW
Our RPG battle system is a bit unconventional
Turn-based, 1 vs 1, directional dodges, arena positioning, diegetic ailments⦠it's a lot to learn at first
After beating the boss in the demo you may think you've seen all it has to offerβ¦
But you haven't seen anything yet πππ

Rejoice, YELLOW PAINT lovers!
We've decided to add some AAA features to our game!

(We're too busy to make more April Fools' content, so we'll do what any JRPG does to extend the runtime: Backtracking! Maybe next year we'll repost it with a different color palette)

Not enough guidance. Game's too obtuse
πππ
There's no hand-holding. Love it!
We got both kinds of feedback with the demo. This point is SO hard to balance
We'll make some changes to ease players in the 1st level, but we still want to keep a sense of "detective-ish" discovery

There's more to games than raw tech
The look of a game is most of the time the product of artistic intent, even if it's shaped by limitations
Not having realistic graphics in our game may be a blessing in disguise. Because no one is gonna use something like DLSS5β¦
Right? π π¦ #indiedev #indiegame
Thank your for your kind words! We're working on ironing those flaws out πͺ
A publisher once told me "Releasing your demo in this state was a mistake."
We know some things definitely need improvement (we're still in dev!).
But instead of letting it collect digital dust waiting for a publisher that might never come, we put it out there.
No regrets.

-You can save multiple times during a level
-You don't need to start over a level, you can load a previous file anytime if you feel you've lost too much time
-You can replay a level if you've missed anything
-You can 100% the game in just 1 run
(2/2)
To answer some recurring questions we've been getting:
-It's NOT a time-attack game
-Timer alternates between real time, 10x slower and stopped
-Story mode: time stops in combat/menus
-Pause any time
-The exit to each level can be found in a timely manner. Use the rest of the time to explore
(1/2)
Do players really hate time limits?
Our game has a 6-hour narrative timer, but each chapter has its own limit and time runs 10x slower in combat/menus.
Should be enough time to find an exit and use what time's left to explore!
How was the demo for you? Did you run out of time?
#indiegame #RPG
If you like RPG/adventure games, I'd recommend you try the demo! We've done quite a lot of optimization so everyone can play and it runs well on most PCs (we have a 10-year-old PC and it runs at 1080/60fps without frame generation) π
Thank you and completely agreed! Throwing assets in an engine without deviating from the standard settings will make for similar-looking games. In our case, we defined the game's look in UE4, so we don't use many of UE5's graphic features, which in turn helps with performance.
"All Unreal Engine games look the same"
I used to think this too. Then I saw Guilty Gear Xrd in motion and it opened my eyes!
We wanted a visual style that could stand out on our very limited #indiedev budget, but it's still a crazy amount of work! π
Some people hate reactive mechanics in turn-based RPGs.
Our battle system is built around them, so adding the option to auto-dodge/auto-parry would break it π«
But in Story Mode you can equip skills (on-screen prompts, one-button dodges, slowed-down attacks) to help with that!

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll definitely look into it!

Our game does not use GenAI.
It feels like as good a time as any to clarify. As "inefficient" as it may sound in today's landscape, we enjoy doing things the artisan way.
Everything you see in this clip? It could be better, but we had a blast making it ourselves! (Λ΅ β’Μα΄β’ΜΛ΅)Ω

With all the debate, we'll have to add another existential dilemma to our pile, right next to: What is a JRPG?
(bc we are making an β¨indie JRPGβ¨, just so you know!)
Some say our battle system is boring because you canβt attack.
But you can!
We use the first fights to teach the basics (dodging, parrying, arena interactionsβ¦) before introducing the first offensive skill.
Or should we unlock it from the start? π§
