Your Moon stan needs to last at least 5 days until they fly by it and preferably 10 after they return. But also any duration of hope is good

ArtemisII launching soon! The mission trajectory is below, in a past role I led part of the teams that put this together. Some highlights... 1/
After flyby, Orion gets pulled back and accelerates the whole way to a high speed Earth atmospheric reentry. It'll be amazing, hope you follow along /end
Apollo 13 crew flew furthest from Earth passing the Moon when it was at its furthest from Earth (lunar orbit is just slightly elliptical), math matter kids. 7/
At flyby, the crew will pass about 5,000 km beyond lunar farside. Timed to ensure its mid crew day (not asleep) and lighting for science observations. Furthest above farside humans have been but NOT necessarily furthest from Earth. 6/
When all looks good, Orion will perform the rest of the TransLunar Injection (TLI) burn on a path for free return flyby of the Moon. Another safety step, no more major burns are needed, the precise targeting and the Moon does the work to send them home 5/
This is a test flight and most importantly, the first flights of life support, crew accommodations, procedures, etc. The HEO provides near Earth aborts and early return as a precaution. 4/
In HEO, Orion separates, the crew will demonstrate proximity operations with the upper stage for future flights, and then coast for 24hrs to do full systems and life support checkouts on Orion 3/
First a nominal launch from SLS to a low Earrh orbit, Orion deploys solar arrays, preps and the upper stage first raises pedigree and then boosts to a High Earth Orbit. The HEO boost is about 2/3rds of the energy to the Moon, just doesnt look it by apogee distance 2/

Out for early morning run, car never saw me or attempted to stop at the intersection. I did a Dukes of Hazzard style hood slide, landed on my feet, and kept running. Stopped running in the dark after that because i will only be so lucky once.

Canceled what was supposed to be a trip to LA visiting some of our partners today. Thoughts and hopes for safety for everyone impacted by the fires.
