"Greater alignment with EU financial services regulation, particularly as a third country which cannot influence that regulation, is not an attractive option either to the sector or to the govt.."
🖊️ @drsarahhall.bsky.social on financial services and UK-EU relations
🔗 ukandeu.ac.uk/the-city-has...
"Overall, financial services is a rare area where the UK appears happy to position itself as a competitor to the EU, focused on its own priorities within its wider growth agenda"
✍️ @drsarahhall.bsky.social on why financial services are not part of the UK's EU reset

The geography of payments is an interesting often overlooked part of financial services

Even as the world changes dramatically, UK discussion of Brexit goes round the same old loops. I wrote a piece on the @ukandeu.bsky.social site in *2016* about the 'sector-by-sector' approach Starmer's now raising. Some details no longer hold, but the basic points do: ukandeu.ac.uk/is-a-sector-...
"Navigating Brexit has always been about trade-offs, and if Labour is ready to move then it should be ready to fight for what delivers the most benefit for the longer term, not what appears easy in the short-term."
✍️ @matthewharries.bsky.social on UK-EU relations
🔗 ukandeu.ac.uk/thinking-swi...
"Without closer cooperation, one thing is clear: the EU and the UK will keep confronting the same threats with little alignment."
✍️ @antonspisak.bsky.social & @jbenford-berlin.bsky.social argue the UK and EU should cooperate more on questions of ‘economic security

A further example of the ways in which the City’s urban form sheds light on its economic focus - payments is an area that I think economic geographers are getting more interested in right now www.ft.com/content/f581...
The economic impacts of Brexit: new research from my @kingscollegelondon.bsky.social colleague Paul Mizen et al brings together macro (top-down) and micro (bottom-up) evidence.
They find a large and persistent negative impact on GDP, output and productivity.

Don't Panic: Britain is not broken. The UK can do better, but we shouldn't be too gloomy about things. If you look at the stats, there's a lot to be happy with (including how happy we are): adamcorlett.com/2025/11/30/d...
I always find it interesting how changes/future changes in the City's skyline can tell you a lot about changes in the City itself about politics, regulation and the economics of finance 👇
