-The long awaited (much warned about) intro of “AI” recognition. It starts w/ searching for a “brown dog” but means the tech is there for lisence plate reading, face recognition, searching for suspects by description, etc

As you fight ICE in your neighborhoods, always look for potentially positive outcomes to counterbalance your anger and despair. For me this continues to be meeting more neighbors, talking to more neighbors, and finding that others close by have also been fighting in ways I was unaware of.

📢 EXPOSED: Big banks and investors are pouring $ BILLIONS into the salmon farming industry, driving its enormous growth and huge profits at the expense of wild fish populations and communities around the globe.
Here are 5 key takeaways from our new report that you should know about 🧵(1/6)
NEW: AquaBounty GMO salmon was going to be the future of fish — and the future for one Ohio village that offered incentives to make a new facility happen.
But years after breaking ground, there are no fancy fish tanks. No designer fish. No new jobs.

Excellent long form piece in Slate about fisheries management of forage fish like menhaden, bunker, anchovies, and sardines. Multiple examples given dramatic ecosystem effects. Article also discusses the difficulty of conserving low profile species.

I think this On the Media episode about how little information Israeli's are getting on gaza and how the media reinforces propaganda is useful to listen to BUT there's a tenor to the interview that frames it as "in contrast to US coverage" that is wrong

an article called "Police spending has 'no consistent correlation' with lower crime rates, new Canadian study says". under the headline the subhead reads: “I think a lot of people simply assume that more money for the police will mean safer communities,” said co-author Akwasi Owusu-Bempah. “We’re demonstrating that that’s not the case.”. under the subhead is a photo of a street in toronto with a police cruiser blocking traffic and yellow caution tape stretched across the street

"But by demonstrating that catch shares — at least as they’ve been implemented so far — are a failure for fishermen, the collapse of Blue Harvest may still prove an actionable lesson for policymakers as they weigh how to best preserve both resources and communities."
"Much like with farms, once a fishing business is lost, today’s financial barriers make it nearly impossible to restart it, especially when catch shares are required to fish. That means that, for many New Bedford families, fishing has become a family legacy, not a livelihood."

Catch shares became "more valuable as assets to be bought and sold than they were as a way to encourage responsible fishing..."

A cautionary tale to consider, given that in 2020, Walmart announced new plans to brand itself as "a regenerative company."
"It seems more likely that regenerative, like sustainable, will become a word whose meaning is determined by Walmart," Van Neste writes.
Yet the impacts of the corporate greenwashing — or in this case bluewashing — have already been felt. Walmart has "moved the goalposts," declaring that MSC certification is synonymous with sustainability, harming small-scale fishers, and shifting the burden of proof.
In a 2021 interview, Teresa Ish, Walton Family Foundation’s oceans initiative lead and senior environment program officer, said: “It is kind of ironic that it all comes back to that management side, but that’s where we are now.”
"MSC and the Walton Family Foundation, both historic advocates for free-market environmentalism and limited regulation, have recently been in the position of 'asking' the governments of countries where Walmart buys fish to bolster their fishery management and regulatory efforts," says Van Neste.
