The ending to this movie is basically the ending to GMK except the Dad in GMK actually SURVIVES the ridiculous situation he puts himself in.

100% worth a watch every time

...It's such a wild take, particularly because the monsters in that movie are utterly stunning, and the plot is cheese on the level of Astro Monster or GMK.
