In other words, *stalled* investigation gets boring.
Adventure writers (including GMs who homebrew your adventures), you can keep a mystery story fast paced if you have a plan to interrupt the players with new events or information when the investigation pauses.
We're working on a mystery adventure (much too early to say more) and I learned this from playtesting it:
Roleplaying the PCs investigating, asking questions and finding clues, is not slow or boring. Getting to the end of a line of inquiry and not knowing what to try next is slow or boring.

In a D&D like #TTRPG there is more than one way to give PCs magic items. Sure, adventurers can find them in a tomb. But consider having them right some wrong for a ghost or spirit, then the spirit agrees to possess their weapon, making it enchanted, and help them for the rest of their career.
