Hahahaha. The inside of that building sure feels that way.

I hated being put on diversity panels because it wasn't my area of expertise. I guess that's changed a bit since then, but I'd still rather talk product to a product audience.
"Are you here for the diversity?" 💀💀💀
I was skeptical, but my partner has one and now I'm sold on it. Easy battery access, especially for all the rechargeable ones.

Ecological awe is a thing I’ve mentioned about in a few talks, but I don’t think it has a super solid definition anywhere
@grimalkina.bsky.social introduced me to the idea and I fell in love with it
To me, ecological awe is a deep respect of and ability to articulate the nuances in an ecosystem
I woke up my partner cackling when I read this earlier. What a ludicrous idea.
Did you see this? github.com/JuliusBrusse...
Who needs context embedded in language anyway?
What's a bit of casual racism putting the Chinese language into a project called "Caveman"?
This is my default search engine for that reason. noai.duckduckgo.com

This damn post has absolutely ruined my brain every time I hear someone mention "for the time being." Major kudos to the poster, if I ever meet you in person I will congratulate you and then punch you in the face.
I had a link in the previous issue that really stuck with me, about the real bottlenecks of the process that vibe outputs completely overwhelm
My dad called this second order consequences.
It's like IBM Watson, 10 years later.
And then attaching this to ideals of craft, mastery etc, and lots of applause from tech folks including some folks I know. I worked for a long time with many students who experienced profound discrimination and exclusion from tech so it's hard to see
I came across Evan Dahm's work many years ago. I even have a volume of Vattu at home! So well done.
If all goes according to plan, in a few hours, a crew of astronauts will begin a journey that will take them on a loop around the moon. Here's a video that NASA put together to help people visualize the journey through space, first orbiting the earth before looping around the moon and flying home 🔭
Such a good read.
I’ve posted it before, but it feels evergreen
The two hardest problems in Computer Science are
1. Human communication
2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important
me screaming: NPS only works if they don't understand NPS!!!!!
Everyone understands the NPS scale now.
Every time something like jira or gmail asks me to fill out an NPS survey, I'm like, "What exactly do you think the choices in this space are?"
Low volume enterprise product. They measure success via NPS and talk about it like it matters. I'm dying inside.
We’re losing the ability to make computers and helium balloons because society maxed out its tech tree
Earth can no longer earn more skill points, only reassign them. Discovering a new technology requires forgetting an existing one
I'm so tired of AI everything. The costs to the business are so high. 😭
Your company doesn't need an "AI strategy."
It needs a business strategy that happens to use AI where it makes sense.
The difference is everything.

someone like doctorow will never take the extra step this writer is very kindly inviting them to take because foundational to their worldview is the idea that digital tech is liberation. seeing it as emerging from oppression invalidates everything they’ve ever advocated for.
there are real experts on the Iran War geopolitics & geographies & i'm very far from one! (the human & ecological costs that people in that region are paying/will pay are unconscionable)

Next up in CAT TALKS: I will be speaking at CTO Craft Con Toronto, coming up May 19-20.
And it's going to be a very special BRAND NEW keynote from me: What To Do When You’re Measuring It Wrong: A Software Scientist’s Guide to Designing AI Evidence that Actually Helps 😄 😱
