🇲🇽🇺🇸 REPORT: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that her government will raise migrant deaths in U.S. detention before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and file a brief in a lawsuit challenging conditions at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, where 52-year-old Mexican citizen Jose Guadalupe Ramos died on March 25, 2026—marking the 14th Mexican national to die in ICE custody in President Trump’s second term. 🔸 Ramos was found unconscious in his bunk at the private detention facility, located about 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Detainees said he had been struggling to breathe and showed signs of overheating. He was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, though witnesses allege he may have already died in his cell. ICE later pointed to pre-existing conditions—diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol—in explaining his death. 🔸 The IACHR, a regional human rights body linked to the Organization of American States, is not a criminal court but carries political and legal weight, often pressuring governments to change policies. Mexico’s move marks one of its strongest public criticisms to date of U.S. treatment of migrants.

Mexico’s move marks one of its strongest public criticisms to date of U.S. treatment of migrants. 🔸 Mexico said it will file an amicus curiae (i.e. supporting the case without being a direct party) in a lawsuit challenging conditions at Adelanto. Detainees and immigrant rights groups say the facility denies medical care, provides inadequate food, and lacks basic sanitation. 🔸 Sheinbaum said Mexico is actively following up on investigations into deaths in custody, sending formal diplomatic communications seeking clarification and accountability. Mexico is also strengthening its consular network in the U.S. to provide better support, including legal assistance, direct contact with families, and closer monitoring of detention conditions.
