I suspect the US defence industry is massively corrupt and seated as much in the past as the US car industry is.
EU/UK have the brains and the money to create some of the best defense systems available. But while being tied to legacy US systems it's unlikely they will make the progress needed.
No expert but seems modern defence procurement in the US implies the receipt of endless dollars for doing absolutely nothing, while pretending something is happening and delayed.
The sooner the UK/EU/Canada/Australia/NZ etc can wean itself away from the corrupt US defence industry, the better.
