A minor set back today... Finally tested the new system with the work arounds I've spent the last year on. Short story is that it works, but no matter your build you have the same output in combat...
Only option is to go to a d100 system so I can save the other mechanics :/

My new TTRPG is really coming together!
Tonight I've finished pretty much all of the mechanics with just Magic left to flesh out :D
Final touches will be some flavour elements before it goes to be reviewed.
I'll need to think of a story to use for alpha tests soon!!! - Oh, and a name...
So, it's been slightly over three years since the shitshow that was #oneD&D. I have in response to it and subsequent shitshows been rewriting 5e. I have a playtest where you can try out my fighter, cleric, ranger, monk, bard and warlock

Turns out it's #Strahd month! If you're gearing up for the new Ravenloft adventure, grab the complete map bundle for Curse of Strahd (I'll add the new adventure maps to this bundle soon!)
Perfect for print or VTT, plus a bonus map of Berez so the hut can move!

I'm seeing similar thoughts quite a bit on this. Essentially backgrounds seem more important for game immersion than they are for boosts/bonuses. I like that approach - you want players to be fully engaged so they can enjoy the game to its full!
That's a nice approach - I'm carrying a few features that use advantage but nothing to say it can't be applied as a background bonus!
It's usually when the group stops engaging. If it feels like more work to run a campaign than it's worth, it usually means the party aren't enjoying it...
I then make the call on how close we are to the end - pretty close I'll railroad 1 last session to bring it to a close
I run a pretty cool Discord server full of nerds.
We recently added channels for Pokémon and Stardew Valley.
Monthly movie nights and videogame giveaways, lots of pet photos, and a bunch of sleep deprived people saying good morning every day.
Wanna join us?
This is in line with where I was going with this - I'm making a game and wondering if backgrounds are actually needed. Currently they give a stat boost but it's only useful to get the character started. Within 1 session it seems to be useless...
That's a good point - I have had players who freeze up making the character creation choices and I've had to nudge them to an appropriate on for the game. They usually end up engaging better than players who choose it themselves and then can't fit the world because they're rigid to their background
Slowly but surely making progress!
A year and a half after setting out to make a new TTRPG I have the mechanics pretty much there plus some awesome species!
Next steps are testing them, adding items, and developing feats.
Shouldn't be long for the alpha test :D
I've done that once with a player who's character died and they were bogged down at work so couldn't make a new one. They just picked a race and I drip fed backstory to help them build their character. Ended up being one of the best characters for a campaign I've ever seen!
That's a good point - almost like the backstory features should emerge as play goes on rather than shoehorning a few skills bonuses in before you know who the character is
I agree with the use of them to create depth for the PC, but wonder if mechanically they are needed. 5e for example gives you a skill boost and some equipment - shouldn't the GM be able to give you better/tailored equipment and bonuses based on your actual character background?
#TTRPG Folk - are Backgrounds essential for character creation?
Would you just embrace it if you had a character without one and just built their story on the way?

#TTRPG Folk - has anyone come across a reliable city/town ratio?
I'm thinking something like: Population:Wealth:Crime:Health:Technology which will help get a general balance to what should be happening in the towns and cities and could help with encounter planning
If anyone is interested in #minifigures and is on instagram, give my Dad a follow!
He got back into it after a stroke as part of his rehab, and is finally happy to share what he's been making!

Be vewwy vewwy quiet, I'm hunting TTRPGbits.
I do have 2 mouse NPC's called "Sabo" and "Tage" for this.
They're based on the mouse from Valiant in the French resistance who runs around with matches trying to blow things up.
The player isn't on bluesky however!
The Piper - an underground "theives guild/resistance" made up of small animals such as rats and pigeons. Often overlooked, they have been able to ferry messages and small objects across resistance cells without getting caught. They are led by The Piper, who controls the creatures like the Pied Piper
Thank you - I'm basing it on in game learning so feels like it is very hard at first and then becomes very easy as you level up. Just trying to strike the right balance
#TTRPG Folk, do you prefer games that are hard but easy to level up characters, or easy and hard to level up?
Just heard my Boss is taking Catch the Chicken to his gaming weekend!
Either high praise or high pressure for it to be fun - I'm not sure which yet

Hmm, the new series of Bridgerton is just cinderella... doesn't even seem to be trying to hide it...
And resolved! Luckily found a work around that didn't require me to pull the core mechanics apart again
