I want to continue a bit on this subject, which (so far) I see very little concern about. There are vast stores of private data that we’ve built up in various places, including messaging apps. A real “killer app” for Gen AI is to ingest them and turn that data into revenue.

RAM: il problema che non esiste. Come molti della mia generazione ho iniziato a usare i computer quando la RAM si misurava ancora in kilobyte, e per un bel pezzo il lusso erano i megabyte. I gigabyte sono arrivati relativamente tardi...

By the way, I know many academics whose wage is a bigger theft (I’m not thinking to you, given I barely know you)

I guess signal is not @meredithmeredith.bsky.social ‘s one-woman-show. If signal recognize her that wage, it means it’s her market value. Sometimes be the political front face is more demanding than being a good technician/researcher, especially in controversial projects.

Microsoft Gave FBI BitLocker Encryption Keys, Exposing Privacy Flaw The tech giant said providing encryption keys was a standard response to a court order. But companies like Apple and Meta set up their systems so such a privacy violation isn’t possible.

Microsoft is handing over Bitlocker keys to law enforcement. www.forbes.com/sites/thomas...

@silicondust.com what about buying your DVB-T/T2/C HDHomeRun FLEX QUATRO (HDFX-4DT) from Italy / Europe ? .. Amazon has only ATSC version, and it seems the only vendor inside old continent, so avoiding import fees, additional taxes , shipping delays

Of course with fallback to Apple’s data centers ‘till needed, eventually without. Let’s democratize the home server and AI idea thanks to Apple Silicon efficiency and delocalization needed by privacy! #rant #apple #atv #ai #privacy

Sharing my secret tech dream with @rmondello.com : an AppleTV with huge amount of RAM (512GB? 1TB?!) and Mx (with M=?) running a local LLM for whole family/home (family and home in their Apple meanings) and remotely accessed by Apple devices when outside

Vorrei una rendita mensile/secondo stipendio da Amazon Finanza, che investirei in una ditta che regala depuratori d'acqua, per ricavare una rendita che mi permetta di andare a curarmi i denti in Albania :-D

Maybe mobileX could seek any (weak) pattern related to 100k SIM acquisitions
even if front-men, if not bought through a very long period they should leave some buy or activation sign

They recently put out a call for an expert working group (I applied!) and I’m hopeful maybe they’ll start to fix this. But the speed at which they’re pushing the ChatControl/CSAM regs makes it unlikely that they’ll wait to received feedback from those groups; maybe leadership doesn’t care.

Interested in “or use data” part. You mean you can navigate only via WiFi?! đŸ€”

The EU’s Chat Control proposal has been stopped, for now, thanks to opposition from Germany and Luxembourg.

But the fight isn’t over.

We’ve been opposing this dangerous attempt to weaken encryption since 2022, and the EU will likely try again.

In the last decade, web3 has sparked a renaissance in public goods mechanism design little known in academia. I’m excited to share a (still evolving) short history of mechanism design for public goods across academia and web3 to help bridge both fields. Explore the timeline: recerts.org/history đŸŒ±

WhatsApp fixes 'zero-click' bug used to hack Apple users with spyware | TechCrunch A spyware vendor was behind a recent campaign that abused a vulnerability in WhatsApp to deliver an exploit capable of hacking into iPhones and Macs.

NEW: WhatsApp has fixed a "zero-click" security flaw in its iOS and Mac apps that was being used to stealthily hack into Apple devices. Amnesty said the hacks were part of an "advanced spyware campaign."

WhatsApp tells me they sent fewer than 200 threat notifications to affected users.

The 17 y/o asked me today if I knew Europe was planning to spy on kids’ text messages and I had to correct him: no, the EU has plans to spy on *everyone’s* text messages. But I guess this means the word is getting out.

For the ninth time I’m going to repeat my personal conspiracy theory that every democracy is fighting a battle to control its Internet against foreign influence, and “age verification” is not being pushed so hard because kids, but is actually one weapon being deployed for that fight.

Mainly advertising or maybe public contracts are very important as well? The public customer is the only one who can issue fresh money

It seems pretty obvious to me that western governments are looking at China and other countries with monitored/sealed Internet and slowly putting the pieces in place to do the same thing for their own Internets.

My favorite thing about social media is the weird people who emerge when you’re talking about basic privacy, and accuse you of having things to hide.

Hey crazy person: *of course* I have things to hide. We all do. Being human means being embarrassed about personal stuff.
