Qualitative research people (inside and outside the academy) this is a really experienced and well-thought out transcription business which has been going a while. Seriously, look into using them if you need.

You're not going to defeat Christian nationalism without working with Christian socialists, sorry

The debate about engaging with religion on the left always gets stuck on whether religion is fundamentally reactionary or progressive, instead of recognising there are always strains of both in conflict. The only useful response is to elevate the latter to counteract the former

It's that time of year when all the Jesus-was-a-socialist takes are reposted so if that resonates with you and you want a broader take on how to integrate spirituality and socialism read my book

Your favourite fiction structured as a diary?

One enables and invites engagement with art by dislikable individuals, the other disables and discourages it.

Maybe this all sounds obvious, but it feels like the discourse often ignores this difference and people end up talking past one another

'You can't separate art from artist' could then either mean 1) we need to take the artist's beliefs and behaviour into account for the fullest appreciation of an artwork, or 2) we must renounce all artworks created by artists that don't meet our ethical standards

Arguably if I approach a work in any way that I would not the creator β€” e.g. enjoying a book by a person I feel has repulsive views and would happily see expelled from my community β€” then I have on some level functionally separated art from artist

If you want to understand all the causal influences on an artwork then clearly art and artist are intimately related. But you could also take inseparability to mean our *response* to art and artist should be inseparable. So if rejecting the person then I should reject their art

One problem with arguments about 'separating the art from the artist' is that some people mean that in an analytical sense and others in an experiential sense, so the conclusions from that same phrase can be entirely different

Good to know that there might be an audience for it πŸ˜… lovely to meet you

All I can add to the 'are audiobooks reading' discourse is that a number of times I've listened to a novel and thought the prose was okay, then gone back to read the physical book and been far more impressed. Clearly something is lost, and that something is key to my maximal enjoyment of literature
