Responding to the Northern Powerhouse Rail announcement, Ben Plowden, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport, said: "Communities in the north of England finally have the welcome news they deserve after decades of enduring a rail network no longer fit for purpose. Rail is one of the UK’s most powerful and proven tools for delivering sustainable economic growth and reducing regional inequality. Investment in large infrastructure projects like the Northern Powerhouse Rail, alongside local projects such as the Leamside Line, and integrated with better bus services and improved walking and cycling routes, will deliver better connected, more prosperous communities across the North—achieving vital growth without compromising on environmental goals.”
