Another hour of driving in, they passed through a tunnel lined with glowing worms and mushrooms growing upside down, sending sandy drifts of glittery spores down onto the car. Brian turned on the windshield wipers, and Aaron firmly told Ripley not to open the window to collect a sample. “Can I at least take the cover off the sunroof, then?” Ripley asked. “Fine,” Aaron said. “But don’t even think about opening that, either!” Ripley stood up in the back of the car, peering at the mushrooms and the spores through the sunroof. It was hard to get a good look at anything while they were moving, and he fell down a couple times before Brian told him to keep his butt in his seat, but he managed to get a couple okayish sketches done. “We’ll have to come back through here on our way home,” he said. “I need to get a better picture of those mushrooms. And the worms! I can’t even tell what they look like from here, they’re just bright green lines.” Aaron snorted. “We’ll see about that.” “Aw, sweetheart, I’m sure we can at least come back for photos,” Brian said. “Maybe if we find hazmat suits somewhere—” “I’m serious,” Ripley said. “They can’t be poisonous. Look how many other people are driving through the tunnel.” He started scanning the other cars, then pointed to one slightly ahead of them. “Look, their window’s open too! It’s fine!” “What if they’re, ah,” Aaron began, but as they pulled up beside the car in question, both he and Ripley could see that the family in the car were all human. “See! They’re fine,” Ripley said. “Sure, okay,” Aaron chuckled. “But you’re not rolling down that window. I don’t want any of those mushrooms growing in my car.” “I won’t! But we’ll be back for photos, right?” “Yes, we’ll be back for photos.” “Promise? No— double, triple, upside-down, banana split with whipped cream promise?” Aaron and Brian both laughed lightheartedly as they repeated their special promise back to him. Ripley pumped his fist and said, “Yes!”

I won NaNoWriMo!!! Something like my 11th year participating but my first year that I told myself I'm gonna do it, no excuses. And I did!! I even got charms to show for it
