What is a University Press? I was having a pretty good week last week, until we got to the closing minutes of play. At that point, I learned that Amsterdam University Press (AUP) had been acquired by the for-profit corporate pub...

What is a University Press?

On the acquisition of AUP by T&F (and my anger at it), the governance link between universities and university presses, and putting one's labour where one's values are.

Keith Hudson :: Pick A Dub

aquariumdrunkard.com/2025/05/14/k...

2024 heralded the 50th anniversary of this seminal dub record – one of the first of its kind – and it’s no exaggeration to say this release from Jamaican producer Keith Hudson remains one of the genre’s high-water marks.

Chicago Sun-Times confirms AI was used to create reading list of books that don’t exist Outlet calls story, created by freelancer working with one of the newpaper’s content partner, a ‘learning moment’

Historians know that incorrect information becomes increasingly hard to fact check over time. We are sleep walking into an age of misinformation as we increasingly rely on AI to think for us.

What makes me mad about AI in education How to crush a generation and tell them they're winning

I wrote about the widespread adoption of AI in education, and why there needs to be more resistance to it

It turns out, it doesn't matter if you're a children's librarian in Kentucky, a medical librarian in Massachusetts, or the literal Librarian of Congress...

They'll accuse you of the same culture war nonsense all the same.

Like some of us have been saying for years.

Ready to band together yet?

“Avril 14th” 2025. For those who celebrate.
Thank you Aphex Twin for the timeless piece of music.
Once you become the bearer of a beloved piece of repertoire, it grows and changes with you. It is new with each performance. And you can never stop visiting it, or it goes away. Music is magic. 🌸

A good chunk of the Gen AI argument is based on the same flawed discussion that there's been around skills for far too long.

A fundamental lack of understanding of what an idea is.

Visual art is not just 'a picture'. Having an idea about a single moment in a story isn't writing.

Librarians and other administrative/professional folks in UK higher education, now is the time to join a trade union. They can support you through a redundancy process or employment dispute, but typically you need to have joined before the issue arises, not after.

Gutting IMLS is devastating. There’s funding to states that help provide access to the internet, electronic resources, programs that are meant to help the community. I don’t think people realize how big of a digital gap there is and how much libraries and museums supplement educational needs.
