‘Donnyland’? Ukraine Proposes Renaming Part of the Donbas in Trump’s Honor

Nice try from the Ukrainians. But to really get this war over there needs to be a Trump resort in Odessa and a Trump Tower in Kyiv.

An 'Open for Open' Hormuz Deal Could Break the Iran Stalemate | Council on Foreign Relations Pressing economic concerns should compel the United States and Iran to decouple their blockades of the Strait of Hormuz from the complex and likely lengthy negotiations needed to reach a settlement on...

The negotiations with Iran would be considerably hastened if Trump were to transfer the negotiating portfolio to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and whatever Iran, energy, and nuclear experts remain at the State Department after various political purges. bit.ly/4dZga9v

Opinion | Trump says Cuba will be ‘next.’ Here’s what he doesn’t get. Cuba needs real regime change, not a Trump-friendly despot.

Instead of promoting democracy, Trump is seeking to install deferential dictators. As he said, “When somebody’s nice to me, I love that person… even if they’re bad people.” Installing obsequious autocrats may gratify his ego, but it’s hard to see why it serves U.S. interests. wapo.st/4vLxQfs

Opinion | Cuba needs real regime change, not a Trump-friendly despot The president says Havana may be "next" after Iran. What does that mean?

Trump might be more cautious now that he has seen in Iran what can go wrong with a “little excursion,” but he might also be eager for a diversion from the Middle East mess. Cuba is much weaker than Iran, and therefore an inviting target for a bully like Trump. wapo.st/4vLxQfs

Trump issued an executive order claiming that Cuba “constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States. In truth, William LeoGrande, a Cuba expert at American University, told me, “The evidence that Cuba is a national security threat is vanishingly thin.” wapo.st/4vLxQfs

I offer a modest suggestion for the US-Iran talks:

An “open for open” formula, under which both sides end their blockades of the strait, could offer a way out of the negotiating stalemate evident this weekend.

The US public has little patience for Trump’s unpopular war—and that makes it hard for him to hold a tough line against Iran. Speaking on CNN.

Instead of trying to resolve all the outstanding issues between the US and Iran, Trump should offer an “open for open” deal to get commerce flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking on MS NOW about my CFR think piece. bit.ly/4dZga9v

The U.S. blockade, adding to the misery of the long-suffering Cuban people, appears to be an attempt to soften up the country for regime change. Trump says that Cuba will be “next” after the Iran war. His goal is not to create a democracy but to install a deferential dictator. wapo.st/4vLxQfs

What Trump, with his contempt for the rule of law at home, doesn’t seem to grasp is that creating a welcoming climate for foreign investment requires, above all, the rule of law. Yet there cannot be an independent judiciary in Cuba as long as the same regime remains in power. wapo.st/4vLxQfs

What's motivating Trump to focus on Cuba as his next target? It seems to be a combo of animus against the communist regime among Cuban American supporters, his desire to control the Western hemisphere, and his sheer, transparent delight in flexing America’s unrivaled military power. wapo.st/4vLxQfs

Trump says Iran talks will resume, threatens power plants and bridges if no deal The president accused Iran of violating the ceasefire as ships reported attacks in the Strait of Hormuz but said U.S. representatives would be back at the table this week.

Trump doesn’t seem to get that when you make threats and don’t carry them out, they become less credible in the future.

Oh no. The most inept negotiators ever are being sent to strike a deal with Iran. The same guys who haven’t been able to end the Russian war in Ukraine and whose blundering at the negotiating table led to the war with Iran. I’m sure this will go really well.

Behind Trump’s Public Bravado on the War, He Grapples With His Own Fears The president’s impulsive style has never been tested in a sustained military conflict, and he’s been ruminating on Jimmy Carter’s failure in Iran.

“At one point [Trump] even mused he should award himself the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor.”

Do they normally give out medals for recklessly launching an unnecessary war and having no idea how to end it? 🤔

Trump is very good at market manipulation but very bad at actual diplomacy or war fighting. He is also completely disconnected from reality, which should (and does) worry the entire world. None of the claims he made in Friday are true.

Like I said, the markets were over-optimistic. Don’t mistake Trump’s rhetoric for reality.
