I think to me where the disconnect is, is that Darby was basically simmering in the background for months. That adds to the shock factor moment but doesn't a good story make.

I think they were trying to tell the story that MJF was trying to take the night off, right down to trying to win the match basically the same way that he beat Darby at Full Gear 2021. And then Darby leaned into not wasting chances and so he cheated also.
