The full list of candidates standing for election in each ward should be published tomorrow. I've recorded a little message to let you know what my plans are and why, but, most importantly, to thank you for the past four years.

Thank you for being a superb Councillor @david4bkh.bsky.social - we've greatly appreciated your work and support for the area on a whole range of issues. Very sad that you won't be standing again (and by how it was handled), but all the very best for whatever you do next. You'll be missed!

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

Climate breakdown is occurring more rapidly with the heating rate almost doubling, according to research that excludes the effect of natural factors behind the latest scorching temperatures.

“That is injustice. It could be improved, but British governments have made choices that mean poorer children get old sooner and die earlier than richer children. The fact our healthy lives are now getting shorter is also a political choice.”

Brummies face five month wait for recycling collections to return The Birmingham bins strike has now rumbled on for 12 months - and it could continue well into 2026

A year without recycling collections with 5 more months ahead - much of a city has lost the practice to recycle not to mention the economic value of materials loss. As society , how do we restart a healthier relationship with materials? #birminghambinstrikes

Was at a Christmas party with a load of clergy last night and as some people were leaving they found a person collapsed on the street outside so the Verger took over and called an ambulance and sent all the clergy away because "if they wake up surrounded by priests that'll just make things worse"

As we come to the end of (probably) the UK’s hottest year on record, let’s keep pressure on the government

What Robert Redford Never Lost Sight Of The impact that the legendary actor, director, and Sundance Film Festival founder had on Hollywood is immeasurable.

One of the most emotional parts of this job is writing about the end of a person's life.

Far from morbid, it feels sacred. It's a time to explore a person who mattered deeply to others—and explain why.

That's what I tried to do here with Robert Redford.

Bottom trawling to continue in English protected waters, government rules Defra says blanket ban on ‘destructive’ fishing practice disproportionate as MPs urge minister to reconsider

This is infuriating. What is the point of a Marine Protected Area if trawlers are allowed to keep ploughing it?
Yet again, the government has succumbed to commercial lobbying.

In Birmingham we’ve got bin strikes and have had no recycling collection since January (it’s extraordinary - London would tolerate this!) - we therefore don’t have these dilemmas anymore!

The small groups of men imposing flags on Birmingham communities have found a resonance with some people. And certainly not all of the people that welcomed the flags are racist and anti-migrant. But they must accept that many people in this city do not subscribe to their world view…

Alan Kurdi, dead on a beach

Alan Kurdi, dead on a beach

It is very nearly the tenth anniversary of that brief moment when, for 2 or 3 days, British newspapers remembered refugees are desperate human beings who need our help, rather than scum that it's okay to threaten with violence.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.
