"Meet You in the Music" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–163
...
This period in my Living Trip gave rise to a powerful current of intelligent and profoundly spiritual emotions and a great many of my favourite wordsmiths came out to play.

This piece began while thinking of a friend I lost some years ago. We're all one-of-a-kinds but this cat truly was a realised bit of whimsical art. His tune was "Lodi" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. He'd jam this at the lakeside and I recall him lighting up as he related the tale of that one time someone from the opposite shore played back.

I have a powerful bond with music and can instantly teleport to whichever memory adheres itself to the tune, whether emotionally, synaesthetically, or both.

John Sebastian chimes in with "Do you believe in magic?" and yes, Johnny, I DO.

The righteously swell J.C. said that if you pray for what you want as if you already have it, you'll find your way to it alright. The utterly brilliant Linda Goodman took this ancient bit of hippie magic and came up with, "expect a miracle," and this never fails to move me.

So, "Lodi" plays and I'm absolutely there, jamming with old Al by the lake. And so many other magical songs hold the keys to splendid whens and wheres and perfectly lovely whoms. Xanadu, baby. We never trip alone. Meet you in the music.
...

"Geraldeen Mezzanine" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–162
...
Right, a bit of a break from the Tolteca trip. I've completed the oddity of an odyssey (I'm usually like 20 pieces behind by the time I get to posting) but at the time, I'd experienced a mighty influx of ideas for pieces other than Tolteca.

I like, periodically, to revisit ideas I'd had when I was doing an older style and marrying them with a more current jam.

One of my precious castor plants, the scrappy, miracle runt of the litter, little Amelia Jane, had sadly rejoined the Earth Mother at this time and I needed a bit of a receptacle in which to trap the bittersweet wave of feelings that accompanied the passing. I do love my plants so.

Anyway, "Geraldeen Mezzanine" was the direct result of all this. I find it funny that, in my break from Tolteca's Rorschach symmetry, I still opted to take the symmetrical route.

"Tolteca IV β€” The Top of the World Blues" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–161
...
This piece continues our Tolteca trip, which began in the "Machine City" piece. This is the follow-up to the In Tent City run but with full-blown pieces instead. There will be breaks along the way.

I decided, in order to once again preserve every bit of nuance I could, to document each leg of the journey in a series of abstract pieces: A grand oddity of an odyssey thru the inner workings of my own cosmic clockwork, complete with mirrored effects in the Living Trip.

As such, most of these are Rorschachs with intended design. Tone was far more important than form. For each tract, I selected the song that fit the best on a synaesthetic and emotional level and used it as a means to fill in the tonal blanks.

This one made use of the Carpenters' "Top of the World."

The drones and I, once the flames had subsided, rebuilt the fortress of Ramble. Nearest we could fathom, perhaps the God Empress of Quasar would find her own way back if her glorious temple were restored and visible for all to see.

In the meantime, we soared like butterflies above the vibrant landscape of this wild, wild world. The mood hits precisely like the sweet little song being sung by a sadly doomed individual.

The very worst thing about being on the top of the world is that you're more than likely gonna eventually plummet and that in itself is a strange form of blues. Being so happy you fear the fall.

The magic of Tolteca was at its faintest right at this moment and the drones and I celebrated resurrection with unsure hearts...

The cool, crystalline Cave of Shard gave way to a jungle of flame. I was incredibly dismayed to learn that Tolteca's great fortress, Ramble, had been razed by assailants unknown.

Impossible to tell if this were the work of the Machine, her own drones, or something akin to the Topsfield monster. The most dedicated of Tolteca's drones set up a search party.

My best assumption was that we'd find her, that's right, dancin' in the ruins...

This one made use of Electric Light Orchestra's "Shangri-La."

The journey out of Quasar's jungle and thru treacherous, sun-cooked deserts of glass was a doozy. We were tested every step of the way by poison doubt, fever of dread, and unblinking stares of a myriad of different types of predator creatures. Ticklemonsters, Cady Ghosts, sickly slinking uncanny primate horrors... you name it.

It was oddly safe so long as I stood still but there was the goal of the audience with Quasar's God Empress Tolteca, which beckoned in the distance, not allowing for anything less than a steady stroll.

There were also countless lures about. Lures in the dark. One of 'em got me good and I found myself in a cool cave of some sort. There, I found a divine shard of Tolteca's engaged in hypnotically kinetic growth. A new spiritual element I had never before witnessed (no doubt one of the Holy Configuration's subtler, no less constitution-quaking gifts) sprang forth in her glow, blanketing her in a perfectly lovely gyre.

The call from this shard was an oxymoronic soothing jar impossible to resist.

We followed it into a wave of intense flame...

This one made use of Healing Force's "Golden Miles."

The ozone-heavy reek of the Altar of the Fed's blasted remains gave way to the sticky, rich, swealter-warm breath of a vibrant Mesoamerican jungle. I immediately recognised the place. 'Twas Quasar, of course. That little world that carries on nestled within my own eyeball (where even the damn birds are high!).

What luck! I'm really quite fond of the place's resident God Empress. Perhaps I'll be granted an audience!

Peering thru the canopy-dimmed jungle foliage, I caught sight of the miles of not only oppressively humid jungle tangle, but of sun-parched outback too. Cheatish predators seemed to lurk along the entirety of the way.

At the distantly-visible end of the journey, however, there danced the constitution-quaking presence of perfectly lovely feminine form. Oh, almost certainly a fiendish trap, this. One would have to be out of one's mind to attempt this... Or deeply within it.

Well, off I go!

This one made use of The Buggles' "Johnny on the Monorail." Both versions!

We began with a revisit to Machine City, the source of most vile feelings, in an attempt to lure the next bad trip out from hiding and confront it with the grace of the Cosmic Wind at my back.

I found it a shell of a place, conquered and largely razed in my considerable efforts to cull its toxicity from my being. There was, however, a flicker of magic within its core: The Altar of the Fed.

Impossible to tell if this was good magic or more cruel, Chernobogian sorcery, but it was blessed with a powerful beckon and the Ram in me simply could not resist. The mushroom missionary in me also needed to confront this.

The sticky, rich, swealter-warm breath of a jungle and the constitution-quaking presence of perfectly lovely feminine form was the utter freight train of a greeting I got charging headfirst into that nebulous flicker of magic.

Out of this forsaken place!

"Beautiful Thought" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–156
...
This became an extremely important piece to me. Right on the heels of a commission that took me to darker areas, I decided to design one specifically to clear up and restore my headspace. Had to be one I'd get lost in for long stretches.

Intending to depict the very thoughts in my head, I ended up with a stunning vision of cars zipping by in stratified layers... so many that there was no empty space to be seen. Then, no, they were sparkly-glowy goldfish going about their pretty little lives.

One particularly bright one, unique in its colouration, split off from the crowd and took the time for a sweet and perfectly lovely "hello" and it moved me beyond my ability to descibe. There's precious soul in every bit of chemical-sautΓ©ed detail I managed to capture.

So I've ended up with my most beautiful thought neatly framed upon my own wall. It's a powerfully spiritual piece for me that has come to keep me grounded and focused during these most gloriously challenging legs of my Personal Revolution.

May you, out there in the Living Trip, find yourself even the slightest bit of magic like this.

"God Help the Beast in Me" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–155
...
This piece was another commission for Vic, who this time wanted wolves. Not a subject that lept immediately out at me, I'll admit.

As luck would have it, an appalling shift in mood came thru with the answer. As mentioned with the "Topsfield" piece, we were in edgier territory here for a stretch as we sought to draw out the next gnarly bastid bad trip.

Foolish frustration led to foolish anger and it was an emotion I was not prepared to deal with. We'd been so good for so long... My despair was very soon to give way to supreme joy and sweet atonement became a truly fulfilling mission.

It was the PERFECT time to get this commission done. To capture dichotomy of mood. Many thanks to Nick Lowe for the piece's title, but it was Santana's "Taboo" I consulted primarily for tone.

I wanted to use a very loose mandrill pallet in order to closer bind the thing to myself, as I feel I must do for every piece.

It was the first half of a very good, pre-bad-trip bit of therapy. Strive to be better but allow for forgiveness of oneself.

"Always be kind. You don't have to be nice, but always be kind."

"Topsfield" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–154
...
At this point in the creative spurt, heading into stress country once more, I was gifted a VIVID vision of another great beast. Something of a bison shaped from Tolkienesque shadow and flame smashing a course directly thru the core of a mighty civilisation, leaving crackling embers, hissing slag, and crumbling edifaces in its wake.

Like most creatures I encounter out on the astral plane, the Topsfield beast was far less scary than its visage would have one believe. As it passed thru me, I heard the cries of the Earth Mother. She spared me and all other travellers the beast cut thru. No, this fight was against the Machine and one got the distinct impression that She was incredibly sad that it had to come to this. Even temples constructed in Her name had to be razed and it hurt Her that it had to come to this: A 'Sophie's Choice' of sorts. In Her quest to keep the Holy Configuration balanced, the Cosmic Even-Steven, She had to destroy some of that magic of which Her children were quite fond and it quaked Her mighty soul.

I pulled no punches in my effort to depict this incredibly moving moment. Grace and Love are the most powerful forces in the universe, for they crush, reduce, humble... but also reconfigure, kiss, galvanise.

"First pride cometh, then cometh shame, but with the lowly is wisdom."

The title of the piece is not a statement. Words could not adequately describe the thing and, while doing some writing about The Box Tops, auto-correct produced 'Topsfield' and it seemed to smack so we rolled with it.

The wisdom I aquired thru my battle with Chernobog has led me to realise that when trips started edging like this, another head-breaking bastid of a trip was coming, so the next run of pieces represent my attempt to find it, draw it out, and meet it with the strength of the Cosmic Wind at my back.

"You're Such a Groove" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–153
...
This one was pure vibe. A futile attempt to break myself out of the abstract bent, I wanted to keep "Groove" relatively free of mental. As such, it is rather understated sunshine. Evening sun at her most graceful: Casting her last, most glorious bit of magic to tide you over until next you're fortunate enough to meet...

The piece was intended to act as a postcard or Valentine in hopes that each and everyone of us gets to feel that they are for someone special.

"Arion Wallows" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–152
...
Back to our regular programming... Since the Tent City project, we've experienced our very favourite creative spurt. Piece after piece have sprung forth from out my soul in an epic procession celebrating new configuration. Some odd ones in there, but work of which I am extremely proud.

The concept of back-alley hippie magic has been a passion of mine for some time and is a VITAL part of my ministry. This piece does have intended corporeal form but I rather wanted to lean abstract with it. The resulting combo is groovy cause the subject is there both in image and in feel.

The piece is meant to evoke a specific feeling I cannot rightly describe but love dearly nonetheless. Whether ya see the fella or not, I hope his magic finds his way to you. You are so very important!

IN TENT CITY: xxiv. Quake
...
At the end of this leg of the journey, we were gifted a vision of our next marvelous quest, to be tackled when the time is absolutely right. Stay beautiful!
...
This project was a major undertaking for me, designed as a therapy of sorts as I continue to purge Machine toxins from my being.

I envisioned a memory quilt of sorts. Twenty-four squares. Each square was to be a complete work, able to be viewed on its own in full quality. Abstraction was of primary focus, tho we were open to whatever the trip brought us.

More important than that, the Living Trip was to provide the inspiration. Whenever a stinger popped up along the way, we would take that single thought, distill it to its lowest common denominator (one word, usually) and roll with it... no matter what.

Each sub-piece thus represents a single thought process and, combined, they make up an entire journey thru a reconstructive phase as we become closer to what we believe we are supposed to be. The best we we can be. I said wee wee. Bugger 🀣🀣🀣

They start chaotic and therapeutic but, after the eleventh, they astonishingly shift into light and we just started rocking things that make us feel good. Raw. Most are kaleidoscopic Rorschach's but intended form is most always a thing.

Additionally, we wanted to use the project as a garden for new techniques. A gravy experimentation jamm!

It was a lovely thing to put together. Magic is real and this piece acts as tangible proof that I can see with my physical eyes. Beautiful, valuable perspective.

I would prefer to exhibit the pieces at full size on a wall. "Little Neutrino" by Klaatu, followed by The Band's "The Weight" are the intended audio accompaniment.
