If you can't come up with just the right word, highlight it and come black to it (just don't forget that part). Often, just some time away from it will help it come to you. #writingtips #editor

Pitching an idea to your boss? Or even just sending an email? Make sure to hit the sweet spot between too formal and not formal enough. Pay attention to word choice and punctuation--they can dramatically alter how you come across. #writingtips #editor

Avoid using absolutes such as "never," "always," "everyone." They tend to be inaccurate and lead the reader to question the info. #amediting #writingtips

Editing is much more than just catching typos. It can save the writer’s credibility. #editor

How has everyone's week been? Yeah...me too. Hoping to get a bit back on track with tips next week (a good distraction, perhaps?).

Many institutions are having to change their word use and/or content due to the new "rules." An editor can help you identify and adjust those issues (though I hate that this even needs to be done!). #academicsky #editor

It's always fine to have your own style, so long as it's consistent, as you said!

And if you'd like more examples or clarification, happy to help. Hard to get detailed in this few characters!

Only talking about when replacing with a general noun. For instance, when referencing the Washington Monument, you'd later use "the monument," lowercase. Truly shortened proper nouns can certainly informally be recognized as their own form of the name and get capped.

That's so sweet! And fun to have it. I wish I had one of our (official) dog as a little puppy. We got him at 5mo. The one I posted is a foster pup (we also have her two siblings and mama!).

When you're referring back to some official name, such as a full name of a university, conference, expo, program, etc., lowercase the noun you use to refer to it later ("program," "university," etc.). #writingtips #amediting #editor

I'm guessing there are a few of you who could use a pick-me-up today (me too). So here's a sleeping puppy. She's as sweet as she looks -- and a good distraction.

Get to the point. Avoid phrases like “to take notice of” when you can simply say “to notice.” It takes practice to spot, but it's worth the effort. Your writing will improve dramatically. #writingtips #editor

Always try your links before you publish or print! Sometimes they worked fine the first time and go wonky along the way. #writingtips #websites #editor

When writing something with facts (names of things, dates, etc.), check that they're accurate! And that includes spelling. There's this thing called the internet you can use to help--so long as you use credible & official sources (more than one helps!). #writingtips

When you're referencing someone with a pronoun, make sure it's abundantly clear who the pronoun is referring to. If more than one person has been referenced recently, it's likely more unclear than you might immediately imagine. #writingtips #editor #pronouns

When writing your bio or other info about yourself, be sure you refer to yourself the same way throughout. In other words, don’t refer to yourself by your first name in most instances and then switch to last name. #writingtips #editor #professional

It doesn't always. Depends on the usage and the exact punctuation...and the chosen style guide. Just as clear and easy as the rest of the English language, right?! 😉

This has bugged me as far back as elementary school. “A lot” is two words (even Word will autocorrect “alot”). #writingtips #editor

Do you have a particular grammar, spelling, etc., point that repeatedly gives you trouble? Let me know and I'll try to help you figure it out. #writingtips

When writing, check for redundancy. You might say one thing one way and the same thing another way. Choose the better way (refine it, if needed) and delete the other. #writingtips #editor

Just wanted to take a midweek time-out to send love and appreciation to those fighting the good fight (in all its forms) to fight for our country. Let's keep sticking together. (And here's your edit tip for the day: Avoid using the same word more than once in a sentence as in this example.) 😉
