Debate: Does the world need nuclear energy? Nuclear power: the energy crisis has even die-hard environmentalists reconsidering it. In this first-ever TED debate, Stewart Brand and Mark Z. Jacobson square off over the pros and cons. A discussion that'll make you think -- and might even change your mind.

In this 2010 TED talk, I linked nuclear weapons proliferation to nuclear energy growth

www.ted.com/talks/stewar...

The response was denial, obfuscation, and attacks.

Yet, the purpose of the war with Iran is to stop them from obtaining nuclear weapons using their nuclear energy program as cover.

In a first, renewables beat natural gas on US grid last month It’s just one month, but it’s a sign of where the U.S. is headed as renewable energy — namely solar — surges onto the grid.

A milestone in March: for the first time ever, renewables provided more power on the US grid than natural gas.

The World Is Responding to Iran by Becoming More Like China That means more electrification, more stockpiling, and more coal.

The most predictable thing in the world: the Iran war is pushing emerging economies to more fulsomely embrace the Chinese clean-energy+electrification model.

I don't want to do a whole long rant on this, so I'll just say: the reason fossil fuels & other aligned incumbents don't want to transition to clean energy is that it will *damage their material interests*. And folks, they understand their own material interests. Really well!

Canada's energy sector directly employs over 300,000 people - of which two thirds are in petroleum.

Geothermal projects use the same expertise and skills as the ~200,000 people working in Canada's conventional energy sector.

This is a space where Canada can compete - and win.

Why rivers in the far north are turning orange The brightly coloured waterways in the Arctic are a sign that permafrost is thawing, with potentially hazardous consequences

“In addition to permafrost thaw, wildfires, are increasing in frequency. In 2024, the combination of wildfires and permafrost thaw in the Arctic tundra meant that, for the 1st time in millennia, the region emitted more carbon than it stored”

#GraphicOfTheWeek: Advances in geothermal technology mean it is no longer limited to volcanic regions like Iceland.

43 GW of geothermal capacity is already cost-competitive with coal and gas, and up to 42% of EU coal and gas power could be replaced.

Since 2021, China has added more power capacity than the US has built in its ENTIRE HISTORY. Read that again while we waste time debating "gas as a bridge" or waiting 20 years for 1 nuclear plant
>China just dropped 543GW in just ONE year

What 1.5°C compatibility means in practice for the revision of Germany’s export credit guarantees for fossil gas infrastructure This blog post revisits what the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C temperature limit implies for fossil gas infrastructure and the role of federal export credit guarantees.

📢 New blog: 1.5°C compatibility in Germany’s upcoming revision of export credit rules for fossil gas

Climate target assessments aren’t sufficient: gas project developers should provide country-specific proof that any additional gas capacity is 1.5°C-compatible.
