Why I withdrew my book from an LGBTQ+ literary prize | Jason Okundaye The Polari first book prize claims to promote trans rights and trans voices. But when I saw the longlist, I had to act, says Guardian writer Jason Okundaye

Great piece explaining the rationale behind the Polari Prize withdrawals and backlash.

I was only talking about this yesterday. Such a grotesque and unedifying moment. Duffield has evaluated all 800+ of us who signed the letter, the two judges and 16 authors who withdrew from the prize and decided to tweet that we're homophobic. Class.

This is an excellent and considered response. Thanks for doing this (and for writing an amazing book with hot mermen in it). Mwah.

I am one of the 14 authors who chose to leave the Polari Prize, and I find myself frustrated and saddened at the way this entire story has been represented. 1/

It's now 16 out of 24 authors and 2 judges, so we're at 2 thirds.

Disappointing statement from the Polari Prize.
The inviolable right of our trans & non-binary siblings to live safely, without fear, abuse or discrimination is not a matter for debate, nor "a substantive issue" & you cannot "hold a different position”
You cannot “both sides” people’s right to exist

I was 7 when I won a short story contest. The prize? A red plastic machine that dispensed mini Dairy Milk bars. That’s when it hit me: making stuff up could actually pay off. Been chasing that sweet feeling ever since.

Highly recommend this layered and nuanced book that addresses themes of grief, the personal cost of activism and sense of self. Oh, and it's funny and compelling. Out today in paperback.

Highly recommend this beauty that's out today. It's a gripping story set in the world of early Twentieth Century circus people. Strong frmale characters, evocative writing and a compelling plot. It's going to be huge. @emmacowing.bsky.social
