Yeah. Letterspacing is the general look of the full block of text. The density of the full paragraph. Kerning is between just two letters. Ligatures solve kerning issues between colliding letterforms in order to achieve uniform letterspacing. You’re really indulging my inner type geek. Haha

Yes, specifically consistent letter-spacing. Without ligatures the letterforms would collide when spaced properly. It goes back to lead type, when fonts had single sorts cut w the ligature and it was used in stead of two separate sorts.
