Great thread on this paper astronomical instrument by Johannes Stabius & Albrecht Dürer -- and for anyone interested in how one would actually use this instrument, Rich Kremer had a journal article in Centaurus a few years ago: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #HistSTM
Yes, it is some really heartening news in amongst all the gloom!

A piece of collage from a late 17th century Irish manuscript. A manuscript made in Dublin but grafted with an image of the crucifixion (probably) from a Netherlandish printed book.
@bryonycoombs.bsky.social and I have been making ink @hcaatedinburgh.bsky.social historical reconstruction lab. My v. easy 1555 recipe is from Alessio Piemontese’s Secrets - it involves wine, very Italian - and made pretty good ink, even with my Scottish galls. Can’t wait til our workshop!
Some really instructive (& fun) ink making experiments with @jillburke.bsky.social this afternoon in prep for a forthcoming ink & quills workshop. Scottish, English or Aleppo oak galls: which makes the best ink? we will tell you after the workshop! 😉
Many experimental ideas in the pipeline ✍️📜🍃
Manuscript marginalia of a green beast about to devour a mirror?
Manuscript marginalia of a monk with wild hair riding backwards on a griffin.
manuscript marginalia of a man with a beard brandishing a sword and riding a small green beast how holds his blue and red cloak in his mouth.
...I haven't found the iconography I was looking for but I am now forever lost in the world of Jean duc de Berry...
Manuscript marginalia: a hybrid-bishop/creature wearing bellows as a mitre and holding a gold crozier whiles blessing.
Manuscript marginalia: an old man riding a green lion-esque beast and holding a large glass flask of pink liquid.
Manuscript marginalia: a young man dressed in fine red and pink robes playing a large jawbone with a bow and riding backwards on a brown stork.
Manuscript marginalia: a hybrid woman figure with a pink robe and white headdress dangles from a line ending, holding a lantern and touching the hat of an old man-hybrid figure in a dark grey robe.
Researching Scottish illumination for the book project and I was led back to the Grandes Heures de Jean de Berry in trying to track down a particular piece of iconography....and it reminded me how incredible these manuscripts are.
Excited that I will be teaching them again next year

Eighteenth and nineteenth centuries I think it was fairly common - a thriving market for cut out illuminations unfortunately...
