ACTION ALERT⚠️ Dept. of Interior is trying to rush through a revocation of Biden’s public law protecting lands around Chaco Canyon from new oil/gas leases. They’ve given only 7 day for public comment, during Easter/Passover. Thread 🧵 below on why you should care, but here’s a link to comment! 🏺

Apparently the stream (the digital one) is so crowded with people wanting to ring the fish doorbell that some people don't get to ring the fish doorbell. ❤️ 🐠 ❤️
Thinking about good digitization practices today as I sigh and stare at digitized/scanned journal articles with completely illegible photographs.
These may or may not be what you are looking for, and I have not used either of them extensively myself, but you might look at Phaser (github.com/stratigraphi...) and the Extended Matrix project (www.extendedmatrix.org/home).
There is currently some construction work being done on our building, and I thought the pounding and drilling sounds were the worst of it. No, the haunting whistle straight out of a horror movie from some unknown tool doing who knows what in the ceiling is also a factor. 😱
This is a great opportunity for anyone who needs to do research in Istanbul (or Türkiye generally), or for anyone who needs time and support to finish a dissertation, get started on that book project, etc.
Heads up for scholars studying Anatolia: applications are open until December 15 for fellowships at the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in Istanbul anamed.ku.edu.tr/en/regular-f... including doctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowships, as well as a few joint fellowships.
The pace at which we are producing technologies that were *literally* the subject of a Black Mirror episode is astounding.
You can "bake" potatoes in the microwave (I have only done it with sweet potatoes, but I am sure it would work for other kinds too) and can hard boil eggs in an electric kettle if you have access to one. I also make basic salads or eat a lot of tuna/hummus with crackers when away from a kitchen.
Is it just me, or is Interfolio suddenly very glitchy? I don't remember having much trouble with it in previous years, but this year I have had a lot of trouble getting it to successfully upload my documents.
They are forcing the privatization of industries—including the space industry—by illegally decimating governmental capacity that has been built up over the last century, and which will be too expensive to replace once it is gone.
😂
And one structural thing: moving from known information to new information improves clarity and helps the reader follow your logic. This can be applied at the sentence level, the paragraph level, etc. I started doing this more consciously after I taught writing and it helps me.
If I am struggling with a draft, I sometimes find it helpful to restart with a blank document. It makes it easier to get rid of what is not working and copy over what is. And, important to remember...the time spent writing the first draft is not wasted time!
The image shows a screenshot from the newsletter of The Chronicle of Higher Education with links to two articles. The snippet of the first article reads as follows: Pauses in Ph.D. Admissions Are a Blessing in Disguise by Maddalena Alvi, "The overproduction of doctorates in the humanities has ruined the job market." The snippet of the second article reads: There Has Never Been a Better Time to Start a Ph.D. by Ada Palmer, "The work force is a mess. But deep skills will always be in demand."
What it is like trying to get advice on academic careers today:
There is something to say here about how the growth of digital methods as incentivized the replacement of other other preservation/repatriation strategies with digital alternatives...

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.
The Tron: Ares soundtrack is out, let's gooooooo. The soundtrack for Legacy was my lifeline while writing papers during the first few years of grad school.
Perhaps one day I will not over-analyze every interpersonal interaction as soon as it is over. But today is not that day.
If any video essayists want to do a deep dive on why I am suddenly getting tons of AI-generated "we know where witches are born" and "here is your witch sign" ads on Youtube, that would be great, hahaha.
Sorry, not a paywall, a password. (I should go to sleep, lol)
I have added the RSS feeds for the pages I am interested in to my central RSS reader to make it easier to follow multiple. It can be a little annoying because I get updates every time someone changes "Applied x1" to "Applied x2," but I prefer that to checking the pages every day, haha.
There is this Academic Jobs Wiki that centralizes links to a bunch of discipline-specific wikis that might be useful: academicjobs.fandom.com/wiki/Academi... Some disciplines are not represented (e.g., the Classics wiki is behind a paywall) and there will be some overlap, but it is pretty useful.
I never liked olives and was told to try them again when I turned 30. Unfortunately, I still don’t like them 😭
Quite problematic when one works around the Mediterranean.
For anyone interested (or who might have students that are interested), ANAMED/Koç University is offering an online program in Environmental Archaeology, taught in both Turkish and English. The deadline to apply is August 29. More information here: anamed.ku.edu.tr/en/projects/...
I think that having a website is useful if you are contingent/on the market and either work at multiple universities or expect to change universities frequently. It also offers more flexibility than other options; e.g., I have a password protected page for my teaching portfolio.
A picture of "Le Poisson Steve." It is a roughly animated orange fish with big eyes, as well as arms and legs. In the image, Steve has his arms raised and is frowning.
Doing some work with Poisson Surface Reconstructions today, which means that I am spending a lot of time thinking about this guy.
Had a small 3D-modeling-related victory today and with, you know, *gestures to everything* I am going to hold onto it as my #tinyjoy for the day, haha.
