There’s a lot of talk among Republicans about overturning a Supreme Court ruling that states cannot deny children a free public education due to their immigration status. Here’s more about that case:

"Journalists need legal protections in order to serve the public. We have asked EdSource to include California Shield Law training in our contract and to require third-party vendors to tell us how they would respond to subpoenas that could reveal confidential information about our work and place reporters in legal peril. Management appears to think these matters are unimportant. As an investigative reporter who faces legal threats from the powerful,I can assure you the risks are real." -Thomas Peele, investigative reporter
All we're asking for is a fair contract. It's been over a year since the EdSource Guild unionized, and we still don't have a contract. Guild members are sharing why reaching an agreement on a contract now is so important. What you can do: Spread the word! Like, comment, or share this post.

It’s not just Ms. Rachel.
The biggest names in children’s educational programming are coming out in force to call for kids to be freed from ICE detention.
Here’s “Reading Rainbow” host @mychal3ts.bsky.social outside the Dilley Immigration Processing Center.
In our negotiations with @edsource.org they're proposing that CEO Deborah Clark unilaterally decide all grievances. In other words, management is repeatedly proposing that management will solely determine what happens if management violates the contract.
We're demanding a real, neutral process.
Are you worried about screen time in your child’s elementary school classroom? Listen to my latest poscast episode:
Workers should be able to care for sick family members. "When my dad needed surgery after months of chemotherapy, EdSource did not provide clear guidance, policy or paid leave as an employee caring for a family member. I made the tough but necessary decision to take time off work anyway. To date, I have not received compensation for two weeks of work from either EdSource or the state." -Anonymous, Reporter

When our colleague's father needed surgery EdSource did not provide clear guidance, forcing them to take leave which they still haven't been paid for. Our proposals would make clear what we're entitled to while EdSource's proposals leave much of it to the same handbook that failed our coworker.
"A new parent deserves paid time off to care for their children. But ad EdSource, we only get what California offers, which is partial pay limited to three months. After my second baby was born at just five pounds eight ounces, I wanted to continue breastfeeding for at least six months to help her grow stronger, but without more leave, I had to stop early." -Sunny Xie, Data Visualization Specialist

Because of EdSource's parental leave policy Sunny Xie wasn't able to spend as much time caring for her new baby as she needed. Our proposal would solve this problem so this won't happen to anyone else in the future, but EdSource has not agreed.
“For many educators, however, the swift changes around Chávez raise a deeper question: whether removing symbols is enough or if schools must also confront the underlying issues of power, violence and historical legacy.” A must-read by Betty Marquez Rosales. edsource.org/2026/cesar-c...
A worker's income should keep up with rising costs. "In my six years at EdSource I've gotten four raises, and not a single one of them was at or above inflation. I've basically taken a 15% pay cut to keep working at EdSource." -Daniel J. Willis, Data journalist

Data journalist @bayareadata.press hasn't gotten a raise since 2023 so, after inflation, he's basically taken a 15% pay cut to keep working at EdSource.

NEW: The 9-year-old who begged Ms. Rachel for help getting out of ICE detention so he could attend his spelling bee has now also been released from Dilley.

I always love when we get students on the podcast, because they bring a big dose of energy and hope. Listen to my latest episode, featuring a student who filmed a "Ghost Hunters" horror-comedy at her high school and aims for the big screen.

You'd think when a child got the highest score possible on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California, that child would be reclassified as "proficient." But thousands of kids remain labeled "English learners" even after testing proficient. My latest: edsource.org/2026/califor...
Greenfield schools’ failure to provide interpreters for indigenous languages in Mexico left many parents unable to advocate at crucial times, like when their children were bullied, involved in fights or suspended. My latest @edsource.org:

After Renee Good was shot and killed by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis, students had a lot of questions: Was she yelling at them? Was she aggressive? Was she rude? Can we film immigration agents? Will we be arrested if we do?

Our negotiations with @edsource.org are slow and we still don't have equitable pay, work-life balance, or a fair contract. We're sending this Valentine's Day card to our bosses, please sign it to support us!
This week, we're honoring Betty Reid Soskin on Education Beat. The oldest national park ranger and a civil rights icon, she advocated for remembering the history of people often left out of the textbooks. This is the story of how students renamed their school after her: edsource.org/podcast/how-...
I was so honored to speak with @josemedinajr89.bsky.social. His message is so powerful. "If a child says, parquear, instead of saying, No se dice asi (That's not how you say it!), I can say look what you did! You combined parking and estacionar! Shut up, linguistic prowess!" Listen:
