literally every day my wife or I go outside with our daughter people go out of their way to be friendly, offer aid or a kind word, no matter where we've traveled. it's nice to remember that hostility as default mode of interaction is not destiny, much as it benefits some to pretend it is

EU’s energy crisis response is broader than expected: remote work mandates, heat pump subsidies, EV leasing schemes — plus electrification targets and new laws to tax electricity below fossil fuels.
Hey it's Friday and the Canadian oil industry made $1.5 billion in profits this week.
🧵 Thread...
“an increasing number of governments … are designing policies with long-term demand trends in mind, including the prospect of declining fossil fuel use and the risks of stranded assets” 🙌
A GENTLE REMINDER: we are trying to eliminate fossil fuels because using them kills us.
If fossil fuels were cheap (they're not) or reliable (they're SO NOT), it would still be urgent to get rid of them because their intended use destroys our life support systems.

Excellent article showing arts and heritage funding has a multi-layered positive impact in rural communities. And cuts amount to loss after loss for youth: “A lot of the services these small cultural and arts organizations offer to kids used to be considered essential — and were offered by schools”
“Exhortations from political leaders like Carney to simply “take the world as it is” condition citizens to believe in inevitability, to conclude that we are without choices and, comfortingly, that we are without responsibilities.”

“The report also called on Canada to review its participation in the Safe Third Country Agreement with the U.S. Under the pact, Canada and the U.S. recognize each other as a safe place to seek refuge.”
Ok, here it is, massively updated with today's news. I haven't gone through the program cuts myself yet but I will at some point!

A strategy I am recommending to people who don’t want to mask all the time is always in healthcare facilities and public transportation, AND if you see someone in a mask, put yours on. The first helps protect spaces high risk people may have no choice but to go, the second shows them support.
Bill C-12 is a dangerous law that could expand deportations, deny refugee protection, and give the government new powers over migrants’ lives.

As Carney Travels the Globe for New Alliances, He Looks Away on Human Rights
Canada’s prime minister chooses pragmatism in a turbulent world, which means doing business with countries that do not share Canada’s democratic values. Some critics see this as weakness.

The Canadian Bar Association is urging the Senate to press pause on Bill C-12, as its immigration provisions could put Canada at odds with its international law obligations and disproportionately affect vulnerable groups. nationalmagazine.ca/en-ca/articl...
"The [federal] cuts will include slashes to program budget for the housing program, supports for economic migrants and health care cuts... And 4 municipalities (Toronto, Montreal, the Peel Region + Ottawa) will likely face increasing costs to house asylum seekers."

How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.
Take action now to stop Bill C-12, which would put our friends and neighbours at risk. Despite outcry from human rights groups, the Bill was rushed through the House.

Its always unnerving to see people talking about war like its sports game, supporting their respective teams, like its not something with extraordinary destruction that, under the BEST of circumstances, those who haven't been obliterated, will need to spend many decades attempting to rebuild from.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has also stated, "As the Carney government is planning to transfer health care costs to refugees and cut processing capacity, it is also proposing sweeping immigration changes that undermine the rights and protections of migrants and refugees.“
Humanitarian fallout from escalation in Middle East is increasingly daunting.
International law is best protector against vicious cycle of violence and war. Humanitarians will hold line, and continue to save as many lives as we can.
A stocktake of the crisis and our response:
Yesterday, students across Europe walked out against militarisation and conscription. Young people are saying loud and clear: we don’t want a future built on war while schools and social programs are cut. Solidarity with the student strike movement. ✊

By me: Today marks 10 years since the assassination of Indigenous environmentalist Berta Cáceres, a rare leader whose death marked a before and after for many including me. Despite some justice, the extractive economic model and its criminal modus operandi continues apace.
