Monday 4th August 2003 | Warming Up | RichardHerring.com When I entered the gym changing rooms today there was a man standing in the bit with the hair-dryers. I would say the presence of hair dryers suggests that this area is to be used by men who are dryin...

Reminded me of this old Richard Herring story www.richardherring.com/warmingup/4/...

In April 1992, Robert Altman's The Player was released, garnering lavish praise for its opening scene, a complicated ensemble tracking shot. In April 1990, Coronation Street was doing stuff like this, and nobody batted an eyelid.

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

Because I never got over tracking all my play stats in detail, OR being an album completist, I've noticed that this happens to me, annoyingly. I think a big reason is because I often put on headphones to do a thing (typically traveling) and then the break point in the album depends on the distance.

I used to say deploy Friday as a motto long before I discovered platform. It might have been why I joined up 🤔

Regular Expressions and counting lengths

I found myself wondering how the default regular expression implementation on your favourite scripting language counts accented characters

People don't really watch or fund movies the same way any more, sadly. Maybe Bollywood / indie horror.

He really struggled to get anything made in his last decades. One of my personal Art Heroes though.

I remember urging everyone i knew to watch Gothic when I was a teen, with mixed results.

Love Ken Russell, love this, although I haven't seen it in about twenty years.

I did rewatch Lair of the White Worm not too long ago, and it still worked.

Cate Le Bon was superb at the Barbican tonight. Bobby Gillespie popped up twice (once in place of John Cale then on again at the end with Dry Cleaning for “Are You With Me Now”).

Cate Le Bon was sensational at a sold out Barbican Centre this evening. Her band were like shape-shifters, swapping instruments literally during songs whilst Cate was the glue holding everything together. Fabulous.

"My newest hobby is finding lines from The Simpsons that could pass for Morrissey song titles."

I took this image from somewhere else and can't write all of these out on my phone, so if you're reading this because you need the alt-text, take the opportunity to brainstorm some good ones of your own.

My own SFF conception of LLMs as intelligence is kinda like Gene Wolfe’s megatherians from BOTNS - colossal distributed beings whose pawns speak in regurgitated phrases but which can also create a sexy mermaid
