For the last weeks, @paulovaml.bsky.social and I were at the Paläon Museum to study the bone tools from Schöningen. This fantastic collection is crucial for the #ERCStG ExOsTech to understand the origin of bone tools in Europe. @univbordeaux.bsky.social @cnrsecologie.bsky.social @pacea.bsky.social

A four-panel (A-D) conceptual model showing the evolution of bone preservation conditions in the Galería cave site across different Marine Isotope Stages (MIS). Each panel includes a cross-section of cave deposits and chemical pathways. Panel A (GIIa, MIS10a): Shows waterlogged, acidic conditions (660-620mm/year rainfall) with extensive bone leaching and formation of phosphate minerals. Panel B (GIIb, MIS9d): Depicts drier conditions (600mm/year) with partial bone leaching and CaCO3 migration. Panel C (GIIIa, MIS9c): Illustrates a transition from wet to dry (560-530mm/year) with increasing alkalinity and calcite precipitation. Panel D (GIIIb-GIV, MIS8-MIS7e): Shows cold, arid conditions (520-420mm/year) with intense calcite precipitation and fluorine incorporation in bones. Each panel includes chemical reaction pathways shown with blue arrows, and red arrows indicate key depositional processes. The diagrams show how environmental changes affected bone preservation through time.

Lowest levels <3% survival - heavy rainfall 🌧️ ➡️ acid soils leach away bone.
As climate dries, preservation improves

A semana pasada finalizou a XLI campaña de excavación no Abric Romaní, na que se rematou de excavar o nivel R. Quen sabe o que poderemos atopar entre os milleiros de ósos recuperados! 🦴🦴 🤩
A interpretación que propoñemos para esta ferramenta é que tería sido usada como unha punta de lanza, posiblemente nesas cacerías, tal e como lle deu vida o paleoartista @villesinkkonen.bsky.social bsky.app/profile/vill...
E diredes, que ten de especial? Estas ferramentas non son moi comúns no rexistro arqueolóxico pero o realmente chamativo é a súa función 🧐.
Abric Romaní en 1994 (nivel Ja)
O achado foi realizado no nivel Ja do Abric Romaní (Capellades, Barcelona). ⏳Fai 50.000 anos, os grupos de neandertais estableceron un campamento neste lugar durante períodos longos e estacionais, especializado na caza de cervos 🦌e cabalos 🐎 (📷 Carbonell, 2012)
