My concern is that as I’m deepening my understanding in one specific domain, AI is growing super fast and sometimes I look around and see some of my general knowledge of ML doesn’t apply to the new models as there are way more different ones now. I feel like I’m always behind.

Interesting paper showing how LLMs change their representational geometry in-context to match a task structure: arxiv.org/abs/2501.00070

Here, the model’s latent representations show a grid structure matching the task.

This is how academia loses people who were at some point interested in devoting their lives to research.
In my case, two bachelors (7y), an interdisciplinary (hence 3y) masters and now in the middle of my PhD, I’m wondering if I’d like to work way more than others to gain less and have no freedoms.

All models are wrong, some models are artificial neural networks.

Do other animals understand hierarchical processing? Or it's unique for humans? I know there's a debate on this and I would love to hear your perspective on this.

But aren’t they using at least a simpler version of hierarchy?

Now it’s interesting for me #linguistically how with no words we learnt a game just based on reactions we were receiving from the robot…

Talking to my colleagues at lunch time I remembered a #game I used (forced) to play (by my nephew 5-6yo then ahaha) called Machinarium.
A combination of series of #brainteasers and #puzzles to help a robot (that you reassemble 😄) to restore his friend to sanity in an eponymous city…

Extremely amazing to think about:

Interactive bioacoustic playback as a tool for detecting and exploring nonhuman intelligence: “conversing” with an Alaskan humpback whale

They talked for 20 mins!! They took turns!
The question is what the topic was !?

US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Global Land and Ocean Average Temperature Anomalies for October. Annual October temps, in comparison with 1979-2000 average.
Chart shows October temperatures generally below or at average until 1980, when a staircase-like climb in temperatures proceeds to 2023, which breaks the monthly record by a bonkers amount.
