Every time I hear Spoon sing "I remember when you walked out of Garden State ... 'cause you had taste ... you had taste ... you had taste," I feel simultaneously insulted and inferior, because I did not walk out of Garden State and remember thinking it was actually kinda decent.

Love a high-strikeout bullpen. Now they just need a high-strikeout lefty.
But a good one!
Yep, good point. I guess I still believe they can get solid results from 1B and LF in 2025 without a multi-year commitment. If it's not one of the older 1B guys, maybe it's another trade similar to the one for Bellinger (maybe Naylor or Yandy Diaz).
Engrossing, must-read article on the Jets' toxic culture on The Athletic today:
www.nytimes.com/athletic/600...
I don't think they can do a big, multi-year contract in LF or 1B and still go after Vladdy or Kyle Tucker in free agency next year. I think that's their priority. Either Goldschmidt or Santana would work on a one-year deal. Goldschmidt isn't what he was, but he'd be better than Rizzo/DJ last year.
I think the Yankees should be looking for someone on a one-year deal at 1B or LF. Maybe Goldschmidt or Santana. I think they're going to prioritize budget flexiblliity so they can make a run at Vladdy or Kyle Tucker in free agency next year.
Sad to hear Slim Dunlap has died. :( I might be the biggest fan of the Replacements’ “Don’t Tell a Soul” there is. youtu.be/p7V-PqZRfrw?...
Jets gonna jets.
Erggh, “t-shirt designs”
Me in tee-shirt that says NOPE. Not this week.
Perfect 70 degree “winter” weather in Bangkok this morning. Listening to the woefully under-appreciated Todd Rundgren and wearing one of my own fantasy-baseball r-shirt designs.

Out of these, I like E (depending on what Yankees had to give up for Bohm and Suzuki). Of mine, I like A best (Bellinger, Moncada, Hernandez).
Rate the Yankees package of solutions for 1B, 2B/3B and OF:
A. Cody Bellinger, Yoan Moncada, Teoscar Hernandez
B. Pete Alonso, Nolan Arenado, Luis Robert
C. Christian Walker, Gleyber Torres, Alex Bregman (Chisholm goes to OF)
Arrange a deal for Kyle Tucker that includes the right to negotiate, then sign him to a 10-year deal for $375 million. I’d give up Luis Gil for that.
Feeling wistful on my morning walk because all of the people who love Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (in all their various amalgamations and sub-components) are gradually, soul by soul, leaving this earth.

Poetry!
I also suspect Cohen would have gone higher if necessary. So, assuming the final dollar amount was the key factor for Soto, there was no way the Yanks were going to win this.
Losing Soto sucks, but that money was INSANE. It should work well for the Mets because Cohen seems willing to pay massive CBT penalties in order to win. But that contract would have hamstrung the Yankees *forever*.
Probably gonna repeat this exact scenario again next year with Vladdy.
An additional thought -- Soto at that price to the Yankees would have been a disaster, because Hal cares so deeply about minimizing his competitive balance tax payments. Soto with the Mets should work better, because Cohen doesn't care about paying high CBTs for the next decade if he has to.
Sad Soto won't be with the Yankees, but $51 million a year for 15 years is nuts. Also sad because I think his stats at Citi Field will look more like his stats during his less-than-generational seasons with the Padres. So we'll be deprived of seeing what would have been a more impressive career.
Awaiting the inevitable ESPN signing grade of A or A+.
Merv Rettenmund baseball card
RIP Merv Rettenmund.
Did my first visit to MOMA in about 20 years in November and I can assert that this is true. I’ve walked 15,000 steps a day for years and was absolutely beaten after four hours navigating MOMA.
My guess on the Soto contract? A “real value” of $45 million per year for 14 years with heavy deferrals putting the total contract value at around $730 million.
Me on Bangkok canal with unripe bananas on tree.
It’s a beautiful morning in Bangkok! (And a good time for a self-portrait with bananas.)
Didn’t make sense to sign Adames and then move him to a less valuable position. Plus Yanks don’t need another strikeout machine. Gotta spend on a first-baseman as a first priority (after Soto).
This off-season feels like going to a restaurant that looks decent, but you're unfamiliar with, and you open up the menu and the first thing you see is an onion soup appetizer for $34.95.
