The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Santโs โElephant.โ

Pastblast: "Apple Dragon" was a gouache painting completed in 1997 and sold at conventions as a print, and it remains one of our more popular pieces. Marsha and BJ have some fun visiting a Renaissance Fair in costume, and BJ teases Marsha with a dragon puppet that wants Marsha's candied apple!

Today was one of those special days where a local tells you about a secret spot and the next day you hike back to a giant brick ruin in the shape of an Uncharted level and you climb/hop/scramble all over it holding a nikon n80 w/zoom lens and late that night your body is 44 and was the entire time
One suspects sabotage at that point that's nuts
Illustration of three animals having a picnic under a willow tree. Their tea is set up on a tree trunk table, and next to them on a blanket there is a basket of food and tiered plates of sandwiches and treats. The animals are a fox, rabbit, and badger.

Right. Say what you will about the NGO-industrial complex and neo-colonialism and all that but at the very least if you give money to PCRF or another charity they *might* be able to import more food from outside.
rant over, thanks for reading, if you are a person who uses the word "cuck" in your play, not trying to shame you or call you bad... just be aware that *that's* what you're gesturing towards, *that's* your reference point in using the word. and if you're not comfortable, sit with that feeling.
Long story short, I don't like how fast and loose I've seen people play with the word cuck. I'm aware that likely the vast majority using it aren't thinking about these broader implications and in fact would refuse that archetype entirely... but it's still reinforced by the use and reference to it.
Because *I* don't want to be in the role of "emasculated man". And from the other side, I wouldn't want to be in the feminine role treated as "property to be taken" either. If I were teasing a tied-up sub, me calling *them* a cuck would again pull in this dynamic that is pretty problematic!
And finally there's my frustration that it seems to have infiltrated all sorts of kink and D/s dynamics with this highly-gendered Thing! Hypothetical example but if I were tied up and people were having sex out of my reach as part of a tease&denial thing it'd take me right out of the scene!
There's the discomfort I have that comes from the knowledge that it's a racialized dynamic, and thus using it reinforces the racial hierarchy. I don't think it's really a subversion since the "threat" of this kind of role reversal is a common tool in stoking fear in white men of "being replaced".
There's the gendered part of course, in that anything cucking-related would make me intensely gender-dysphoric because growing up *I* was treated as the "effeminate boy failing to be sufficiently masculine", and this is the experience of *many* transfem & in general AMAB trans people.
Of course people have run with it and used the term in many different ways since but the through-line is this very gendered, very sexist idea of "Here is a man who is not 'man enough' and here's another More Manly Man to prove it by fucking the first man's wife". And I don't! like it!!!!
And *often* the cuckold (noun, man being cuckolded) is a white man, and the bull is a black man, because it *also* calls on these racist stereotypes of the "threat" of black male sexuality towards white men's "ownership" of (white) women. This is the basic dynamic, the archetype, the model for it.
For the unaware cuckold is a verb that means "to fuck someone's wife behind their back". Obviously there's more nuance to it but in the very essence it comes from this place of a man's "ownership" of a woman being challenged by another Capital-M Man, the bull, who is more masculine and virile &so on
Caveat here I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, if you like the term I'm not calling you bad or wrong, etc. etc.... but I wish people who did use the word thought a little harder about what it actually *means*, what it's referring to.
Because it ties into some deeply racist & misogynistic shit
Random thoughts apropos of nothing but nevertheless something that's been bugging me:
I kind of hate how the word "cuck" seems to be everywhere now? Especially in some kink spaces with D/s dynamics, it's become common to see the sub referred to as a cuck and I don't like it for a number of reasons.

Screen grab of an email: At an upcoming performance of Carmen on Saturday, May 16, Seattle Opera will be hosting a Furry Night with a special pre-show meet-and-greet with bass-baritone Christian Pursell, who plays Escamillo in the opera. Pursell will appear as his fursona, Chester the Geroo, and will be available for photos before the show. Although Pursell will not be in his fursuit onstage, we are encouraging audience members to attend the opera in their own costumes and fursuits, if they would like.
This amazing (real!) thing that is happening next month would make an absolutely incredible episode of Frasier
