My former PhD advisor, Mary Murphy, published a Substack this week that’s well worth your time: The Report of Stereotype Threat’s Demise Has Been Greatly Exaggerated.

Indeed, some of the earliest studies (e.g., Spencer et al., 1999) showed the boundary condition of test difficulty. And those gender tests were conducted first (though published after the race tests b/c of reviewers willingness to see the link btwn stereotype threat + race more readily than gender)

I'm not sure anyone is arguing that the performance effects were ever "general" or "broad"--as I said in my piece, there are theory-specified conditions under which we should find performance effects of stereotype threat.

The Report of Stereotype Threat's Demise Has Been Greatly Exaggerated And why I'm feeling a certain way about it

Today Dominic Packer & @jayvanbavel.bsky.social republished @minzlicht.bsky.social's post about "The Downfall of Stereotype Threat" in their widely-read The Power Of Us newsletter. I felt a certain way about that & the evidence presented there & thought I'd respond:

Most reporting is just not up to the task of registering both that 1) the White House is *attacking* universities *as institutions* 2) the White House is working *with* universities’ boards to achieve *common goals* for remaking and weakening those institutions

There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American.

A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

Congress needs to block this. This so incredibly detrimental to the health, welfare, and prosperity of the nation.

Academic friends, if your NSF grants have been terminated by the administration, FABBS is hosting a webinar Friday about appealing the decisions. It's important that as many people appeal as possible to show we're not accepting this targeting of science. Link to the webinar registration is below.

Update! The senate at Indiana U-Bloomington has passed an identical resolution to the Rutgers Senate's calling for a Big Ten defense compact!!

And the Rutgers Senate is meeting tomorrow in a special emergency session to plan next steps. Read their open letter to President Jonathan Holloway below.

I love this work and theorizing by Crystal Hoyt & Jeni Burnette complicating when and under what conditions fixed and growth mindsets might increase or decrease prejudice. If you're interested in the relationships between mindsets and prejudice, take a look!

What an incredible loss. Sam shared so much with the world. I'm so sorry for his family, friends, colleagues, our field, and the world that he shaped for the better.

Instead of "don't cut our funding," our message should be: hands off higher ed.

You want to restrict what professors can say in the classroom? Hands off.

You want to ban diversity offices? Hands off.

You want to cut our research funding? Hands off.

Hands. Off. Higher. Ed.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.

I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

Goran
World - yesterday

As someone who grew up under an authoritarian regime, I can offer one crucial piece of advice: time is everything. If you don’t stand up now—if you don’t protest, resist, disrupt, and refuse to comply—you may lose your country forever. Authoritarianism thrives on silence, hesitation, and fear. The longer people wait, the more entrenched the regime becomes, making resistance exponentially harder. Every moment of inaction is a moment the regime uses to tighten its grip. History has shown that those who act early have the best chance of reclaiming their freedom. The time to fight back is now.
