I agree it's not new but I believe it's grown b/c social media.
I agree some can't afford it though I think we'll disagree about the distribution of affordability vs because they can.
But would you agree with those who were saying 'it's fine because transport should be free'?

I was interested to see so many replies defending fare dodging on moral terms. To me it's equivalent to "education should be free so I'm going to steal this library book". Do you think that's a widespread view amongst progressives?
I think it's the same 'me-first' motivation but obviously less harmful. Do you see (honest question) this as a kind of direct action? As in, we haven't been able to make transport free through politics, so not paying is a more direct way of achieving the same end?

A real good summary of what's been happening and why it's signposting dictatorship in America @brenkjm.bsky.social
Can you not see the difference between free public transport as a policy, and individuals jumping the gates because they don't want to pay? (And who are often aggressive to staff)
Selfishly screwing over your fellow people is not left-wing!
Sure, so let's win power and make it free for everyone. Fare dodgers are working from the same kind of selfish mentality we on the left condemn when it's done by businesses screwing over others
A key part of being on the left is about solidarity and not selfishly cheating others.
I'm no conservative but I see people pushing through barriers all the time, and it frustrates me.
A commenter notes that "Trump managed to be both Hitler and Chamberlain in the same negotiation. An unprecedented feat." 😭
Hitler and the Nazi Party equated themselves with Christianity -- the result was Germany becoming one of the most atheist countries after the war.
It is in Christianity's own interest to rebuff Trump's attempts to co-opt Christianity to legitimize his immoral behavior.

Hi All, just sent out my free weekend update a little early so as to not disturb Easter. I start with the extraordinary story of Russian casualties in March, 95% of which were caused by Ukrainian UAV. And the Ukrainians believe this is only the start. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

What is "deliverism"? Is it dead? And what would its death mean for progressive politics?
This essay (kindly published by @samfr.bsky.social) is my attempt to trace five years of trans-Atlantic debates, to set out what I see as the stakes, and to analyse where these arguments have now gotten to:
This IPSO adjudication against the Telegraph is quite something
Confirms their story titled: ‘We earn £345k, but soaring private school fees mean we can’t go on five holidays’ was completely fabricated, with the family involved non-existent and stock pictures used

"Trump believes he's set a trap that the opposition is walking into. But it might be *him* that ends up getting hurt by it."
Prescient.

🧵 Why does politics feel so stuck? Why does everyone think the government is useless?
Here's a short thread on why badgers are they key to understanding why.
