If I have a chance to bring it up sometime I will!

This is a great idea! Have you brought it up to anyone on council? Seriously.
Mostly I feel like if there are major problems, step up and work to fix them. Do the work. It’s not easy. Leading, especially now, is HARD. And those leading our associations need to make careful decisions for the short and long term.
Steve Ruggles recently gave a talk at IU about the Census and I was struck by how the PAA leadership shifted from being largely connected to these affiliated with the Census to those with NIH funding and pop centers.
I‘ve not been following closely, but this is exactly what I think when I hear people disparage ASA for [insert reason]. We are stronger together (see also: the AMA). Do I appreciate other associations? Yes. But giving up on ASA will undermine us in so many ways, as *sociologists*.
In all seriousness, the ASA medical sociology section has an impressive slate of candidates. And I’ve collaborated with Brian and Mike — they are truly an impressive team, even if their poster making skills leave a little to be desired.
I’m not really sure how to describe this because the images look nothing like Brian and Mike. 😆
Do you believe in hope? Do you want to end the tyranny of Brea Perry’s statements about “big, beautiful” things? Vote the Kelly-Vuolo ticket for Med Soc Chair and Secretary-Treasurer! In the past dozen years, we’ve co-authored over 50 articles together, been Investigators together on 6 NIH grants, received Med Soc and other sections’ awards for joint work, both been Chairs of other ASA sections, both been standing members of federal review panels, both been ASA Editors (Kelly for JHSB/Vuolo for Soc Methodology), yadda, yadda, yadda. Do you want to see that teamwork brought to you, Med Soc?! What do you have to lose (aside from the functional integrity of the section)? See our campaign poster, here: tinyurl.com/e5mwpn57. Think ASA (@asanews.bsky.social) elections are boring? Not so fast. Brian Kelly (IU) and Mike Vuolo (OSU) are upping the ante with their personal statement and CAMPAIGN POSTER for chair & secretary-treasurer of the medical sociology section 😆
This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.
New @urbaninstitute.bsky.social estimates of two H.R. 1 cuts targeting #Medicaid expansion: work reporting requirements & 6 month renewals. Depending on state mitigation, expansion enrollment falls 5 to 10 million (27-55%) in 2028 compared to 18 million under prior law. www.urban.org/research/pub...

Relatable: hasslers harm your health. Oh wow, they may make you age faster too. Wait, it’s work by @letitbk.bsky.social & Brea Perry, with quotes by Deb Umberson.

As we mourn today's Annunciation Church shooting, the reporting and photojournalism are almost too much to take in; sharing this gift link for those seeking good local coverage from Minneapolis. www.startribune.com/minneapolis-...
Eager to read, great work here to the full team!
Teaching this fall? Consider saving time for in-class office hours. Mine are only 5-10 min at the very end of class but I have a line of students asking questions they’d otherwise skip.
Across rural America, Medicaid is a lifeline, especially for people who wouldn’t otherwise have easy access to health care. With Medicaid cuts looming, people are bracing for the impact.

Will there be a spread of pies at the welcome reception? I feel like that would truly motivate (even if it’s not your pie)

View of the Chicago River meeting Lake Michigan. There are skyscrapers to the left side and boats in the river. In the distance is Navy Pier with the Ferris wheel. It is a bright and sunny day with blue skies and white puffy clouds.
Beautiful city, lovely people! Thank you Chicago for hosting the #ASA2025 annual meeting of the American Sociological Association (@asanews.bsky.social)!
Grateful to be on this panel, and thank you to Tiffany Joseph for organizing it. Follow @asanews.bsky.social and @iusociology.bsky.social for more on the #ASA2025 meeting.
4 in 10 pregnant patients and 1 in 4 people use Medicaid. Shifting access among such a large population will have implications for the health of the entire population (and the HC institutions we rely upon). A major population health topic for demographers to prioritize. #ASA2025
Sociologists are poised to compliment work by health service researchers, h econ, and h policy researchers. We provide unique theoretical and methodological perspectives on this phenomena. #ASA2025
Medical/health scholars, we are about to experience a tsunami ripple through our health care system as millions lose access & HC systems lose money to keep the lights on. This *is* a structural determinant of health worthy of prioritizing 👇🏼 #ASA2025
