Germany does not lack talent, and it does not lack funding. But we are trapping 21st-century minds inside 19th-century academic hierarchies. We are asking brilliant young scientists to build the future of the German economy, but refusing to give them the lab space, the job security, or the scientific independence to actually do it. If we want to reclaim our place as an industrial superpower, we have to stop the rat race of trying to keep every technology and structure alive that made us successful in the 20th century. Instead, we must fix our system that pushes our most ambitious scientists away. The money is there. The talent can be there. Now, we also need the courage to fix what’s broken.
“we are trapping 21st-century minds inside 19th-century academic hierarchies.” This essay gets a lot right about problems with German science. I would add that the hierarchies and precarious contracts lead also to systemic abuse and scientific misconduct. open.substack.com/pub/realimag...
Such a fun to read and well written review; can really recommend for anyone new to or already proficient in spatial navigation research!
Another year, another ice-skating event for our lab ⛸️
Thanks to our colleague Ece Kurnaz for organizing ❤️
i've decided not to listen to the audio of a teacher reporting a kindergartender because frankly I don't want to become the person that that event would turn me into. but one thing I hope we are collectively coming to grips with is what it meant that we have lived among such people this whole time
If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.
Democracy dies in oligarchy.
All my #rstats ebooks are now in the quarto format, and hosted on Quarto Pub. Their old bookdown links will all be dead by the weekend.

RegCheck's layout now reflects its purpose: to assist humans in doing a research activity that they otherwise do not do - not to replace them.
Most importantly, the UI provides direct quotes from the papers and registrations to make it easier to verify/refute judgements made by the software.

Our preregistered systematic review & meta-analysis published in Nature Mental Health shows that nature exposure is linked to small-to-moderate reductions in self-reported pain (SMD = .53; N = 4,439). But high heterogeneity and moderate-to-high risk of bias call for a cautious interpretation (1/5)
Wo bleibt Europas Reaktion?
@adreisoerner.bsky.social and @markusforamitti.bsky.social appeared on camera for a PULS 4 documentary on the topic of stress — with an expert interview, a guided meditation and insights into a stresstest. 🔬🎊

New paper out! 🥸
Over the last 50 years, people have gravitated toward music with increasingly negative, stressful, and simpler lyrics. Societal crises like COVID-19 disrupted these long-term trends, suggesting escapist music preferences at a societal level. 🎶🧠

easystats really improved my coding and analysis - this is a great addition!
Had a great talk today at the ISGMA conference about our project combining musicological and psychological approaches to understand how sound artifacts are perceived and experienced. 🔔🧠
Thanks to everyone who stopped by and engaged with the ideas! Great event hosted by @fwf-at.bsky.social
Vaccine Safety MENU V For Everyone NOV. 19, 2025 KEY POINTS • The claim "vaccines do not cause autism" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism. • Studies supporting a link have been ignored by health authorities. • HHS has launched a comprehensive assessment of the causes of autism, including investigations on plausible biologic mechanisms and potential causal links.
This is completely disgusting. Today, the CDC updated their vaccine safety page. It now says:
“The claim "vaccines do not cause autism" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism”.
Great experience presenting at the WASAD Congress! I discussed how Natural Language Processing can advance stress research and how music functions as a cognitive artifact. @wasadorg.bsky.social

🚨💩Very proud to share a new preprint of the lab ~~ we show that gut microbial diversity and inferred capacity for butyrate production predict cortisol stress reactivity in humans ~~ www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
There you go the materials are now on my website. Updated version contains a tiny disclaimer that you should only polynomial safely, if at all.

Are you an early-career researcher (or someone hoping to help ECRs) working in #openscience or #metascience? The @reproducibilitea.org podcast is looking for guests for our next season of episodes! We'd love to feature ECR voices foremost – the next generation of scientists should be heard the most!
Of course it is:
