I’m so curious as well. And I look forward to hearing what comes of your current research!
I once went to a wedding at Penshurst and am now regretting not slipping away to explore the house even more...
that is certainly possible. one thing that's so remarkable is the prominent place of the Black figure -- such a contrast to, say, the riding portrait of Anna of Denmark (1617) or 'King Charles and Henrietta Maria Departing for the Chase'.
I agree, the livery is key. Is the figure in the background accompanied by a dog?
thanks for sharing this, super interesting! I did think that that part of the inscription looked suspect so it’s very helpful to know that’s a later addition.
yes me too!
This is so cool and I can’t wait to see it on display at the National Portrait Gallery. Really fascinating to see this kind of rare double portrait with male figures.

Spotted at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo: Sandra Gamarra Heshiki’s collage of European portraits painted over with Indigenous South American pottery, collapsing longstanding divides between European high art and Indigenous ‘anthropology’ in museums. #earlymodern

think it's fair to say that I need these pixelated/oversized 17th still life prints from the Dries Van Noten FW26 show. #earlymodern
it was a real pain not being able to get into the Banqueting House while researching a recent article (britishartstudies.ac.uk/issues/29/ki...), but how amazing that it's now possible to get this much closer to Rubens' ceiling paintings!
congrats Charmian!

thank you! there's a bit on potatoes, 'Virginia basil', roasted sunflowers, sugar, and other foods that made their way onto Jacobean banqueting tables!

Thank you! I have a chapter on watercolours, so The Head in Edward Nugent’s Hand was very helpful for the John White/Roanoke context!
