Great to visit Menorca again, although did not see too much of it. Went here as kids from 1972, but last time I visited was 42 years ago! The Rapidplay with the World Champion and 5 other top GM's was also played in the same room.

Spent the last week ticking off a bucket list item by playing abroad. 9 games in 6 days in the Menorca Open, with 5 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws. Played a couple of decent games and pleased with the experience.

Malcolm Clarke has long been associated with Hants and SCL chess. His career started in the 1970’s, when he played for Eastleigh, but he also played in London for several years. Recently he has been captaining and secretary of Chandler’s Ford chess club.

Portsmouth Chess Club's 1st match - 1889
Picking up on Hampshire chess clubs again with details added on the Portsmouth chess club, which was formed in 1889 and members include Sir George Thomas, GM Peter Wells.
They have currently won the PDCL Div. 1 title 18 times, which is the record.

In the 1938/39 county chess season Hants had just three county matches. This was the last season of Match Captain Francis Elwell, who despite being 80 still scored 2 points from 3 games in the County matches, and won the Southampton Club championship.

My latest Minor Piece features Annie Mabel Gooding of Cheltenham, who played in ladies' chess tournaments over a period of 25 years, and had draws against Blackburne, Lasker and Capablanca to her name.

Hampshire win against Cambridgeshire from the 1937/38 chess season- Source Hampshire Advertiser.
In the 1937/38 chess season Hampshire managed to win the Montague Jones Cup after losing in the final the previous two years. They also fielded one existing and one future British Chess Champion in some of their matches.
