Posts by NYC for Abortion Rights

All buffer zone proposals at both the New York City and NY State levels are being pushed by Zionist institutions who seek to avoid public accountability for hosting illegal sales of stolen Palestinian land. We cannot let these groups speak over the vast majority of NYers who oppose ethnic cleansing!

Ask State Leaders to Reject All Buffer Zone Proposals!

SCRIPT:
“I am a New Yorker calling to urge the [Governor / Speaker / Senate President] to leave the PPGG Part K “buffer zone” proposal out of the executive budget. All of the proposed buffer zone legislation would accelerate Trump’s repression of free speech. NY Democrats should be protecting our rights, not criminalizing us for exercising them. Thank you!”

State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie

Got two minutes today? Keep urging state leadership to nix the buffer zone proposals! These proposals would make demonstrating or *preparing to demonstrate* (i.e. just hanging out) outside places of worship a Class E felony.

Myth: these bills are police transparency bills
Fact: They are not. 1-B and 175-B do not ask the NYPD to outline current practices/policies related to how/when they are deployed to houses of worship/educational facilities, but rather call on the NYPD to advance a single response: security perimeters

Myth: we have buffer zones at abortion clinics.
Fact: We don't. Our city + state clinic access laws, Admin Code 10-1003 and Penal Law 240.70-240.73, are narrow and targeted. They forbid a specific set of activities within 15ft of clinics. Neither involve buffer zones restricting all forms of speech.

Myth: these bills combat antisemitism
Fact: these bills do not combat any form of hate — they fail to address the root causes of hate-motivated incidents + do not rely on evidence-based studies or programs. JFREJ has evidence-based alternatives to the bills — the city just needs to implement them.

Councilmembers are spreading a lot of misinformation about Intros 1-B and 175-B, the two "buffer zone" bills that are slated to be voted on this afternoon. The bills will not combat antisemitism or any form of hate, and will endanger New Yorkers already disproportionately targeted by the NYPD.

What's the connection btwn foreign real estate companies and a NYC bill? Int. 1-B, sponsored by NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin, seeks to prevent protests outside synagogues hosting illegal sales of stolen Palestinian land. 1-B supporters are enabling Israel's violent annexation of the West Bank.

“Hi there — I am a New Yorker calling to urge Councilmember Salaam to revoke his sponsorship for bills Int.1-B and Int.175-B. Neither of these bills work to combat hate — they are not evidence-based solutions and would only criminalize New Yorkers, particularly New Yorkers of color and LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, who already face violence and prejudice at the hands of the NYPD. These bills are harmful. They would further Trump’s authoritarian agenda and jeopardize the safety of my community. Thank you!”

One hour left to make these calls today! It is imperative everyone call these councilmembers to let them know that they have been duped: 1-A and 175-B are NOT hate crime prevention measures. They are designed to prevent forms of speech that the speaker disagrees with.

Demand NY Invest in Its Abortion Funds and Clinics

Post-Roe, our abortion care infrastructure has already been facing extreme pressure with long wait-times, insufficient staff, and closing clinics.

If NY wants to remain an 'access state' we must demand our city and state lawmakers use state resources and invest in clinics and abortion funds.

One way the NYS Government can do this is by increasing allocations to the Reproductive Freedom and Equity Program, which supports providers and funds, and increasing Medicaid Reimbursement Rates in their budget.

Learn to Support Someone Through Their Abortion

Abortion doulas are trained companions that provide physical, emotional, and informational support to people accessing abortion care.
Join or start your own doula collective (NY is developing one at
newyorkabortiondoulas.org) or reach out to clinics to offer support.

Even if you're only supporting friends and folks in your community, you're doing invaluable work by destigmatizing and increasing access to reproductive healthcare.

Support Your Local Abortion Fund and Practical Support Orgs

Abortion funds provide money to patients for abortion care. Practical Support Orgs (PSOs), as well as certain funds, help with patient travel and lodging costs.
Funds have experienced unprecedented demand since the end of Roe, as patients from banned states are forced to travel. This will only get more dire under a Trump admin.
For New Yorkers, our local fund is the New York Abortion Access Fund (nyaaf.org). You can sign up to help funds and PSOs across the country at abortionmob.org.
