One of the things I used to do back when i was first developing my writing style was to attempt to passively emulate writers I was reading and to incorporate their style into my works. Practice sometimes means emulation. Discovery of self sometimes means figuring out what worked for others.
This Miyazaki episode of Lupin the 3rd had a huge influence on Katsuhiro Otomo -- he learned how to storyboard partly by watching it over and over again
