Ep 13 - The Iniskea Prospect Should Ireland leave all its oil and gas reserves in the ground or drill to achieve energy independence?

The suggestion that Ireland should reverse the ban on drilling for oil and gas has popped up again.
I made a programme looking at this from every imaginable angle.

Listen: 👉 www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...

Spoiler alert: The arguments for drilling don’t add up.

France announces ban on gas boilers in new buildings starting in 2027 French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu also announced on Friday a doubling of support for electrification by 2030, from €5.5 billion to €10 billion annually.

Renewable heating is key to cutting fossil fuel imports 🔥➡️⚡

France is acting on it: its electrification plan confirms a full ban on gas boilers in new buildings by 2027. It focuses on scaling up EVs and heat pumps. The way out isn’t subsidising fossil fuels, it’s electrification and energy savings.

🌍Today is Ireland's Overshoot Day. If the rest of the world consumed like Ireland since Jan 1st, the Earth would run out of resources on Apr 14th.

Last year, this date was May 17th.

This is not just! The climate crisis is happening NOW, and is impacting families in Ireland & around the world.

“At a time when we were exposed again to the worst effects of a volatile fossil fuel market, Irish wind farms halved the wholesale price of power compared to days when we had to rely almost entirely on imported gas.”

While optimistic noises may be made about our progress in limiting emissions, the underlying problem is not being tackled by effective policy measures.

While our EU partners have achieved average emission reductions of 40% since 1990, we have managed a measly 5%.

One of the biggest disinformation campaigns ever applied to cities involves the constant claims that “driving pays its way.” It’s actually MASSIVELY subsidized, while things like walking, biking, public transit & supportive housing for the unhoused actually SAVE PUBLIC MONEY. #UrbanTruth

Ireland’s manure boost faces EU warning over pollution risks An EU adviser says Dublin can’t rely on paperwork alone to justify higher manure limits, putting its farm-heavy nitrates policy under fresh legal pressure.

EU Advocate General warns the Irish Government can’t raise nitrogen limits for farming without proof that it won’t pollute rivers, lakes or protected habitats.
