15-Minute Cities – How Urban Design Entered the Culture War | Origin Story
15-Minute Cities – How Urban Design Entered the Culture War | Origin Story YouTube video by Origin Story

This is so good, we wish WE had made it! The history & lunacy of the disinformation campaign around 15-Minute Cities, by 2 “non experts” @iandunt.bsky.social & @dorianlynskey.bsky.social who show how experts SHOULD be communicating. Thanks to the @originstorypodcast.bsky.social podcast. #UrbanTruth

It frustrates me every time I see someone describe possible things we haven’t been able to do yet as “impossible.” There’s lots of things that seem impossible until we do them.

Today's ignorant naysayers claim "that'd never work here!" when in fact it once did before it was intentionally dismantled for the benefit of the auto industry.

gets really, really underdiscussed but public transit literally saves people heaps of money in the places where it renders cars useless. Imagine not owning a car. Not paying for insurance. No gas refills. No maintenance. it's all just your money.

We’ve been asked by podcasters and interviewers how much of an impact an initiative like ours can have on the well-funded tsunami of disinformation & lies holding back better cities for people.

The answer is up to you. You determine our impact by choosing to follow us & share our content.

Thanks!

Gas stations and used car lots are also fair game in my mind

Obviously small gigs are not enough for artists to live on BUT if you’re a political cartoonist and want to help bring trains to Santa Cruz I’ve got a small gig for you.

Rail gives this county another way in and out. The trail protects habitat along the coast. Investing in both now means we have options when we need them.

Purple line coming through! Purple line also had to deal with anti-transit NIMBY’s and look they did it!

Sounds like a great reason to take the train

Greenway is in the Senile again doing the thing where they complain the project can’t happen because it’s hard and taking too long while forgetting mention they’re the ones putting expensive sticks in the spokes and preventing in from moving forward faster.

Like he’s willing to write a certain % goes directly into TIRCIP and CalSTA or just in theory it could?

Does he also like trains (and want to fund them)?

Okay CTA. This is a good sign.

I actually think about this all the time. Gas stations are blight.

Earth and Moon from DSCOVR NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured this unique view of the Moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side of Earth last month. This view shows the fully illuminated “dark side” of the moon that is never visible from Earth. Ian Regan processed this version of the image to account for the Moon's motion. I hadn't seen this before. This is pretty remarkable.

People talk about “public transit” like it’s some abstract policy debate, but it’s literally the difference between someone getting to work or losing their job.

A bus that runs on time isn’t a luxury. It’s dignity, mobility, and a shot at stability.

Iconic Andy Singer cartoon with a driver saying “Public Transit wastes money. It always has to be SUBSIDIZED!” He is surrounded by evidence that driving is heavily subsidized. In fact, investing in walking, biking, public transit, and housing for the otherwise homeless saves public money.

One of the biggest disinformation campaigns ever applied to cities involves the constant claims that “driving pays its way.” It’s actually MASSIVELY subsidized, while things like walking, biking, public transit & supportive housing for the unhoused actually SAVE PUBLIC MONEY. #UrbanTruth

the amount of money that we have poured into making the automotive industry profitable is really staggering when you look at it

RIP to Rod Diridon who always made time to advocate for more trains, even in Santa Cruz

The Federal Transit Administration released its annual report on new transit projects to fund.

The report recommends a total of just $1.2 b for existing & new projects, a massive reduction from previous years. The federal role in funding new transit projects is being decimated.

Trump walks out like the doddering, vicious old fool he so obviously is. He slouches out, a cross between a corpse and a sullen teenager, a half dead thing made youthful by its bitter jealousies. He wears his insecurities like he wears his clothes: badly and ostentatiously. His face is darkened by the ugly thoughts which motivate him. He grips the lectern and rotates through the four stock expressions he seems capable of, none of them bearing any connection to his words, all of them motivated by vanity, or egotism, or mendaciousness, or bile.

This description of Trump is one of the best I've seen, from @iandunt.bsky.social :

Some Maths
Average new car costs $50k does some $1000 in road damage each year... assuming 6.25% sales tax pre-pays for ~3 years of road usage.
Say a bicycle costs $1k, does a $1 in road damage a year, at 6.25% sales taxs pre-pays for 62 years of road usage.

I know "BUT GAS TAXES!" 1/3
