We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right. Age verification is one of those technological / software fixes which say that they are doing one thing (protecting kids) whilst actually they are achieving something else (enumerating everyone who uses the web) - if you immediately fix on attempting to reduce risks of "enumeration" you end up ignoring: disenfranchisment of people who cannot age verify, political pressure to permit privacy-invading systems as well "in the name of market competition" and a race to the bottom for people's personal data. So ZKP is a wonderful technology when deployed in a controlled infrastructure and under centralised patch management to protect discrete and well described taxonomies of data… but it's never going to happen in the real world because that's not what people in power actually want. This is not a technical problem and it does not have a technical solution. What we are seeing here is the long tail of a moral panic."

As Alec Muffett put it, this is a race to the bottom for our data, disguised as a “child safety" effort.

These shiny technical “solutions” are just cover. What’s really happening is companies caving to government pressure to turn the web into a surveillance machine that tracks us at every turn.

So, shame on these companies.

Shame on Google for caving to pressure and handing over yet another pathway for governments and data brokers to track, profile, and control us.

Shame on them for not defending the open web. For not saying no. For capitulating, just like everyone else.

First it's about minors not being able to access pornography.

Next it's about women not being about to access reproductive resources.

And so on.

I moderaterna är det högre i tak än hos SD. Det Beckman nu sprider ledde till att en SD-riksdagsledamot petades. (Det handlar om en antisemitisk konspirationsteori som Beckman sprider gång på gång.)

Om man bottnar i sina värderingar, så står man för dem, oavsett hur jobbigt det blir att göra det.
Eller så är blir man politiker …
