A good starting point for settings:

Focal length: 24mm or wider
Aperture: 2.8 or larger
Shutter: 15 seconds
ISO: 1600-3200

You’ll obviously want a tripod as well. Settings always take some experimentation and you will need to boost exposure and contrast in post. Good luck!

Actually what you want for Milky Way photos is a really wide lens, not telephoto. Something between 16-24mm (or the full frame equivalent if you have a crop sensor) and something with a bright aperture (2.8 or better)

Not aurora, unfortunately. Even in remote places, there’s a little light pollution from nearby towns (Brookings in this case) and that’s what you’re seeing here.

Same! This was a vacation rental. From home, I’m in the same boat as you (too much light pollution from the city). Retirement goals, I guess 🙂

Sorry, I didn’t mean it that way! I live near the city so I usually have a long drive to get anywhere that’s dark enough for Milky Way photos!

Another shot from last week. 2am shot of the #milkyway as seen from our balcony. You’ve got to love an opportunity for #astrophotography without having to leave the house! #stunday #photography #oregon

Clouds roll into a wooded valley which leads to the Pacific Ocean. Homes in the foreground give way to pine forest covered mountains, dappled in morning sunlight.

Spent the week at the Oregon coast and was lucky enough to enjoy this view from our rental

It sure is! I had read an article a while ago about them taking up residence in pill bottles and other litter when they couldn’t find a good shell and thought about keeping a shell in my camera bag, but I’ve never spotted one in the wild and kind of forgot about it. Great reminder - thanks!

Thank you! That’s exactly what caught my eye as I was walking past

Wow! This is so nice! Do you always carry spare shells with you just in case?

One of my favourite photos from the Vatican museum. Looking up and down at the spiral staircase.

I think it’s 8675309 though… or maybe I’m just not getting the joke? (This song was everywhere when I was in 7th grade so it’s burned into my brain forever)
