in terms of pure haptics, i think it might be the best feeling fighting game ever made? the momentum on dashes. the huge jumping leaps you can take. the crunchiest sound effects on earth. the way it rounded out the cast with super iconic stuff like shermie's running grabs. team sports. team sports
i feel slightly insulted that backloggd sidelines "multiplayer" as a category separate from GOTY, because it makes everyone forget how good some of those multiplayer games are. king of fighters 98 is a GOTY nominee

thank u very much for the long reply, v appreciated :) my friend is not an arcade-head by any means and i hadn't formed an opinion myself yet so i was curious how much i wanted to push through. frontloaded def is good to know and i'm prob gonna give it a shoot soon enough
this is only half related but, my friend has been playing super monkey ball 1 with me recently a lil and she thinks that advanced has more fun types of challenges than expert for the more open solution space reasons u listed. is that a common opinion??
my first 30 hours of tears i thought this made the game more focused, but both tears and bananza both are severely lacking in discovery factor to me. so maybe they needed some secrets that felt valuable
botw/odyssey are inconspicuous with dozens of mechanics that you can stumble onto, and break stuff with if you're smart with them (although much more intentionally than previous gens of game tech). tears/bananza are them putting those interactions in front of you and telling you to go nuts
