Which is the better film, would you say?

I didn't like this nearly as much as the Blind Dead films, but it was still fun! I've got The Loreley's Grasp on the same disk - looking forward to that one.

Zombie warlocks, slow motion leopard vampire women, screaming decapitated heads, characters being whipped until their clothes fall off, and random flurries of lesbianism. Very silly, a bit racist, and nowhere near the quality of de Ossorio's Templar films...but I can't say I was bored!

Wow, these nighttime scenes are very similar to the daytime scenes, but more Blue!

Also, this film is starting out a tad racially problematic, shall we say.

I didn't pay much for this Blu-ray (it's a scream factory double feature with another de Ossorio movie), but man this is a lackluster print - pillarboxed and DVD quality. Not terrible, but leaves a lot to be desired!

I'm shirking baby duty for a couple of hours and #nowwatching The Night of the Sorcerers (1974), an Amando de Ossorio-helmed film about warlock vampires in Africa or something. Very unlikely this will be a patch on his Blind Dead films, but I'm going to give it a fair shake. #horrorsky

Never noticed that!

The poster for blood and black Lace

#justwatched Blood and Black Lace (1964), Mario Bava's famous Giallo. Beautifully shot, briskly paced, and engagingly structured. The characters are thin and uninteresting, but it keeps you on your toes and the story makes sense (unlike some/many Gialli!). So much colour! #horrorsky

Worth the price of admission for the were-tiger transformation alone! As usual with these films we get a nice mix of comedy and horror (with the comedy foregrounded here), and some pretty insane sequences of black magic battling. Ridiculously fun!

#nowwatching Santet II (1989). Our anti-heroine is back to her black magic tricks, and this time she's taking on an animal persona. We all know that nothing beats a good werewolf transformation scene, but have you ever seen a woman turn into a tiger? If not, this move has you covered! #horrorsky

I can do the first and last part of the movement, so the only stumbling block is the extremely difficult middle bit that I definitely can't do.

I've decided my next fitness goal is to achieve a muscle-up, a target which is definitely realistic and achievable for someone a few days shy of 40.

...but I had a lot of fun with it. A pretty decent example of a...what would be the equivalent of 'spaghetti western' or 'macaroni combat' for this genre? Let's go with a 'penne post-apocalyptic thriller'.

The poster for warriors of the year 2072

#justwatched Warriors of the Year 2072 (1984). Lucio Fulci's take on the post-apocalyptic death game genre (Rollerball, The Running Man, etc.). We have a cast of exploitation luminaries and some fun sets and set pieces. The story is a bit underdeveloped and it takes a while to get to the action...

Excellent. A very engaging doc that runs through the history of the genre with a good level of detail. Lots of interviews with people like Argento, Lenzi, etc. I've added a few to my watchlist!

#nowwatching Yellow Fever: The Rise and Fall of the Giallo (2016). I'm going back through my blu-rays and finding all the feature documentaries that I never bothered to watch. This one's an extra on the Tenebrae disk from Synapse. #horrorsky

I liked this one! Klimovsky's films always look pretty nice, and this one had a beautifully derelict rural country setting. The sound was distracting, and I'll probably pick the English dub next time. It reminded me a bit of the 'Midnight Mess' segment from The Vault of Horror (also 1973).

My daughter, at a mere three weeks old, has seen more Paul Naschy films than the average person will see in their entire life.

The poster for the vampires night orgy.

#nowwatching The Vampires Night Orgy (1973), a León Klimovsky film in which a group of tourists get trapped in a village of vamps. The dialogue seems to switch randomly between Spanish and English, and the Spanish has so much echo it sounds like it was recorded in a parking garage. #horrorsky

The only exceptions are feature length documentaries and short films.

A decent little doc, if a bit pedestrian. Cobbled together from archive interviews and newly filmed talking head segments. It was interesting to think about the films in the context of the Franco regime, and I was glad to hear the acknowledgement that the Spanish zombie cycle predated that of Italy.

#nowwatching Marauders from the Mediterranean: The Macabre Magic of the Spanish Zombie film (2022). A feature length documentary about films such as Tombs of the Blind Dead and The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue. I'm loving Spanish horror at the moment! #horrorsky

I love getting a new Blu-ray release, and looking excitedly at all the commentaries and 'making-of's and featurettes that I will never, ever watch.

Jeeeeezus. A slow burn that leads up to a truly shocking and horrific final ten minutes. As expected, the message is that some people are just evil, and loony lefties need to give up on trying to rehabilitate them. An effective film with all the political nuance of a Daily Express column.

#nowwatching Hunting Ground (1983), a revenge thriller written and directed by Jorge Grau (The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue). I've never seen any of Grau's other work, so I'm excited for this. Bracing for the reactionary messaging that's a staple of revenge films though... #horrorsky

I read an academic biography of Marx last year that ended at 51%!

A pretty decent little Exorcist knock-off, directed by Amando de Ossorio (the Blind Dead series). Despite the obvious inspiration, there are enough original elements to make the film feel like its own thing, and Marián Salgado plays a pretty creepy possessed girl.
