DOGGETT: Doesn't your budget propose another 12% cut for NIH?
VOUGHT: Most of what you said is untrue. NIH was not cut at all--
D: My Q is don't you propose another 12% cut?
VOUGHT: We propose a cut
D: Is it your feeling that we just can't afford to invest more in doing something about cancer?

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION WILL DIE TONIGHT My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools. Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's "keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's "we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight." It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before. "It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time. A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead. @michaelfdubois Mukad A QuBoy @michacifdubois

Anthropic is racing to contain the fallout after accidentally leaking Claude Code source code, issuing copyright takedown requests to remove 8,000+ copies.
The wind caught our front screen door and bent the "thingie" that allows it to close. So. Love this wind.
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.
Kristi Noem must resign.
And if she won’t, she must be held accountable and impeached by Congress.
The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.
Remember, if someone has the unmitigated gall to claim that spending the entire weekend reading Agatha Christie, drinking multiple cups of tea, and consuming a copious amount of pastries “doesn’t sound exciting", then your well-being is simply not important to them.
Please keep writing (and sharing) these emails if only because after reading, we will all learn about things we didn't catch happening during these chaotic months.

“It’s great when HBCUs and [tribal colleges] receive more funding,” ... “But it is simultaneously really terrible to take funding from minority-serving institutions over all, which do so much work, not only for people of color, but so many other groups as well.”

I doubt that there is a single family in America that hasn’t benefitted directly from the NIH.
ACRLog has published 1,800 posts over twenty years but I guess I'm the first person to write a post about student debt?? 🤷♀️

Breaking News: The Trump administration announced that the U.S. will take a relaxed approach to regulating the A.I. industry, and said that a federal framework should remove mentions of DEI and climate change.
Then this:
"Led by the Department of Commerce (DOC) through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), revise the NIST AI Risk Management Framework to eliminate references to misinformation, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and climate change."

This article is about a library catalog (in beta) that returned zero results for searches on “Gaza war” or “Tulsa Race Massacre.” b/c it uses a 3rd party AI search assist (possibly Azure OpenAI) with safety/moderation filters that silently rewrote or blocked the queries behind the scenes.
"Uncritically adopting AI tools in discovery systems will perpetuate, if not exacerbate, existing biases and suppression of minoritized people."

When you are getting your work done, but then you glimpse a news headline (really any headline, it seems) and then you feel depressed about the state of the world....so you sit there trying to collect your thoughts and get back into the work, but it's hard, you know?
Image of a Kristi Holmes speaking with a slide she's shared there depicts Health Services Research as a large circle that includes a smaller circle called Implementation Science. Within Implementation Science circle, there are two smaller circles that overlap for Dissemination Research and Implementation Research.
Tuning into the Joseph Leiter NLM/MLA Lecture today with @kristiholmes.bsky.social—loved the shoutout to Sara Becker and the incredible work happening at Northwestern’s Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science (@nucatsinstitute.bsky.social)! #medlibs #implementationscience
In a special presentation on Thursday, July 10, at 1 p.m., Northwestern's Kristi Holmes, PhD, will examine communication as a powerful translational engine, connecting people, machines and systems across disciplines and communities. Registration is free — bit.ly/3ZUNCX4
I failed. I was walking home from the Chicago campus at 9 PM, blissfully unaware of the weather, only to be met by an absolute deluge. Completely soaked. Zero foresight. I had an umbrella but it was little use. I will not do well in this new system.
Duke appears to have lost NIH grants because they used the prefix "trans" in reference to disease transmission, transgenic genetic material, translational studies, or signal transduction www.dukechronicle.com/article/2025...
